Visual presentation is an important factor in determining the satisfaction of our eating and drinking experiences.
Our minds start to process information about food and drink visually before we taste things, which is why so much effort is put into food and drink presentation.
This is why you can start to feel hungry, or to salivate when food looks attractive - it's a form of classic conditioning, like the experiments involving Pavlov's dogs...
Many Dollars are spent by companies developing packaging that increases the sales value of products by developing this conditioning and subsequent consumer loyalty. This is why Coke-Cola and other iconic brands are so easily recognised. Advertising and exposure create a feeling of product familiarity and suggest a pleasant, enjoyable experience with their product. Therefore, when you see it in real life, on the shelf in the shop, your mind forms a connection with the advertising, and you buy the product.
Very clever!

according to the manufacturers, the bottles are completely sanitary and should not affect the taste

NO! what you are tasting is Bisphenol-A leaching from the plastic!

But coke tastes better in the bottle than in the can. Weird i know.

i like the taste of water better too when its in bottles. Especially aquafina water. YUM!
