Question: Has anyone been put off from buying supermarket chickens yet?

Loobyloo......Good for you. Using a local butcher is the best and I do exactly the same.

Good quality has to be paid for - you cannot compare taste as the difference is amazing.

Good luck to Hugh and the programme. Boycott Tesco and all who sail in it. It's a modern day CON - - -AND I FOR ONE WILL HAVE NO PART OF IT.

One wierd guy.

Getting that way, just started watching part 2, i have my cushion to hide behind ready. Yes, i am a squeamish coward.

Not yet

We don't buy them, this programme is just informing the masses what we farmers have known for ages!
We farm arable not livestock!!
All our meat is free range / organic as it truly tastes better.
The supermarkets who sell organic do stuff the prices up though which is unfair.
We grow all our own veg.

I'm watching a programme now it's an eye opener.

edit; I watched a programme years ago about what went into pies and beefburgers it was disgusting the scrapings of the skull that was before mad cow, I would not let my children have them years later it all came out about mad cow.

He has a point. The supermarket chicken priced at £2 had a terrible life. The one he raised and killed personally cost much more than that, but tastes better and had a better quality of life.

We have to accept that if we want animals which have been treated more ethically (more space per animal, more natural feeding etc) we have to pay more money.

its on but im not really watching it .just caught abit of him making the garden nice for them to be happy

YEP YEP AND YEP!!!
x
MIlk as well.
I havent watched it but i know the jist.x

I stopped buying battery chickens some time ago, mainly because I enjoy the flavor & texture of organic better. But watching his program makes me even more determined to NEVER agin buy a cheap chicken!

It should be OUTLAWED!

just watching it now....i 'm starting to question the morality of putting a chicken through a living hell so we can buy 2 for 5pounds....think the mans done well to go to all this trouble to show us as a country whats really going on....

Well for a start he is a pricck for even doing this experiment = unless you live on Mars we all know how cruel chicken rearing is. However, I saw three posh people on a cookery programme try a blind tasting of battery, barn, and free range chickens and honest to god they picked the battery hens as best tasting. That is true. He is making more money for himself and if he eats some of the things I have seen him offer others, well he is disgusting and an insult to viewers.

If it worries you start going to the good old Co-op.

They have forward looking policies on Fair Trade and where they source all their goods from.

I believe HFW charges £18 for one of his chickens.

Somewhere between there is probably an answer

hes doing a great job. anything that encourages people to eat more humanely reared chickens is a good thing. i think though, that there are a lot of people that dont want to know. they will not watch it because they know it will upset their lifestyle. i have a friend who says, dont tell me. i dont want to know about cruelty to animals. sad. very sad
