Tinned/Fresh veg.?!
Answers: Does any one know if tinned vegetables are as good for you as fresh. I have been buying a lot of tinned veg. lately as I only have to cook for two of us. Are they as healthy. Thanks
Fresh is best. What sort of excuse is "i only have to cook for two of us"
How long done it take to peel carrots, potatoes or any other veg?
Buy yourself a steamer and cook your veg in that. you don't boil out any nutrients. You keep in all the flavour and there's hardly any washing up to do afterwards.
mostly not, because when you throw out the water, it has most of the vitamins in it. Canned soups are ok, and a few fruits and veggies are actually *better* for you canned, like hard berries (cranberries) and tomatoes and squash, which keep most of their nutrients locked up in their cell walls until thay have been cooked to death.
Even with only 2 people, fresh is best. If you make enough for 2 or 3 meals, and freeze some immediately after cooking, you can do better than cans. Frozen is also better than canned, and you can use only what you want... though *none of them are crisp.
Good idea to be thinking about it :)
I recommend buying fresh, you dont have to eat it all at once and kept in the fridge can keep for upto 3 days, some upto a week if the fridge is cool enough- you can cook it by placing it in a bowl with about half an inch of water at the bottom and cover the bowl (either with a plate or clingfilm) and cook it for about 5 mins per portion.- that is if you dont want to boil it!
tinned veg will have added nutrients as its in a can, often things like tin and iron which is picked up from the can. All veg will have this.
However, some of the other vitamins will be reduced as the veg is not safe, eg vitamin c, unless you count baked beans, and also the tin and iron in the veg if eaten too much can affect you negatively, so go easy on tinned stuff, overall though, its better then not having any at all.
They are precooked, so loose a lot of enzymes (raw is best with most). They won't have as many vitamins as fresh. Fresh or fast frozen is generally best. If you have a freezer, I'd go frozen.
Hmmm thats a tricky question, look out for added sugars and preservatives in tinned veg, I'm sure frozen are better than tinned and are good for cooking just for two, frozen are even more nutrious than fresh as the vitamins etc are frozen in them as soon as they are harvested.
No, they are not as healthy and they are not as good. If you continue to abuse your body by eating an inferior diet your health will eventually start to suffer.
Well if you are in a hurry and have a busy lifestyle meaning food is left to waste in the fridge tinned is a good option and apparently not that much inferior to fresh nutritionally speaking. I would say look at the sugar and salt content as this is the main factor which can be negative in terms of health benefits as they add salt and sugar to preserve the veggies. I have also attached a link to an interesting article about this.
Not really. Tinned vegetables lose a lot of their flavour and nutrients. Fresh vegetables are generally better.
Have you considered frozen vegetables?
Well tinned fruit are covered in jucie and sugar. were as fresh fruit is natural sugars. Fresh is better. But tinned lasts longer.
Not as healthy as fresh, but not that bad. Fresh would be better though, and frozen..
You'd be better off using frozen veggies rather than the tinned one. The veggies are generally hot-packed in cans, therefore they're cooked prior to packing. Nutrients contained in them are degraded not only by the cooking process but also by sitting on the shelves. Frozen veggies, are at most blanched to retain their color then frozen, which usually occurs at the height of the season for whatever veggie they're packaging. Thus they tend to retain more of their nutritional content. Easy to keep around too, just make sure to secure container in a good ziploc bag.
No tinned vegetables are overcooked and usually loaded with salt and sugar. Tinned tomatoes however are supposed to be almost as good for you as fresh, but they are the exception. Fresh is generally best, but frozen veg is good too. It is usually frozen straight after it is picked so it retains the nutrients well. Just make sure you don't over-boil it when you cook it.
nonono! fresh veg contain a lot more vitamins and minerals than tinned! (or frozen...or cooked)
I am not saying tinned are unhealthy, but simply less healthy.
yes very healthy.. but look on the tin for date. expire, and don't have dented tins good luck
