How can I grate a whole piece of cheese without grating my fingers?!

Question: I know that sounds a bit moronic, but I can't grate a whole piece of cheese in its entirety without catching a nail or grating a finger. How do chefs do it? I don't want one of those mechanical things, they're so difficult to wash and I don't like them.

You could use a mandolin as they have a tool to put over the food product to prevent an accident to your hand or you could cut the cheese into smaller pieces and pulse it in the food processor. There is also a hand tool on the market similar to a meat grinder you can use but only a small portion of cheese at a time and it becomes labour intensive.

I use a small flat grater not a box grater and you can't cut yourself on it. I use it on the dinner table with a wedge of cheese i.e. Parmegiano-Reggiano so that each person can grate as much as they want. I serve it that way for all things Italian as well as chicken soup.

Thank you, it works for me and I always put it on the table for soup and Italian food. Report It

  • either use a towel over the cheese as you are grating or use a fork to stick in the cheese when it gets down that low.. i think they make some guards as well like at Bed bath and beyond or some place like that.

buy a finger guard + eat the little bit that's left over

I use one of those stand up graters, and it doesn't even have to be all the way to the bottom of the cheese and I scrape my fingers or knuckles every now and than. There is a gadget you can buy that has spikes and you use this and it helps.

    Try using some sewing thimbles
