How can I grate a whole piece of cheese without grating my fingers?!
Answers: I know that sounds a bit moronic, but I can't grate a whole piece of cheese in its entirety without catching a nail or grating a finger. How do chefs do it? I don't want one of those mechanical things, they're so difficult to wash and I don't like them.
You could use a mandolin as they have a tool to put over the food product to prevent an accident to your hand or you could cut the cheese into smaller pieces and pulse it in the food processor. There is also a hand tool on the market similar to a meat grinder you can use but only a small portion of cheese at a time and it becomes labour intensive.
I use a small flat grater not a box grater and you can't cut yourself on it. I use it on the dinner table with a wedge of cheese i.e. Parmegiano-Reggiano so that each person can grate as much as they want. I serve it that way for all things Italian as well as chicken soup.
Thank you, it works for me and I always put it on the table for soup and Italian food. Report It
