Are canned foods dangerous to health when I eat them almost everyday?!

Question: i eat canned foods usually tuna, corned beef, pork & beans. I eat them because they are easy to prepare and eat. So I almost eat them everyday, around 1-2 cans per day.

Is canned foods like those that I eat dangerous to my health? Will it make me sick or kill me? Thank you so much. ^_^

Let's start with tuna. There have been studies about the mercury content so it is recommended that you eat it like twice a week. Corned beef in a can packs a lot of sodium that you do not need. Read the labels and try for a brand that doesn't contain over a day's worth of salt in a serving. There are less salty foods like chicken and dumplings, beef stew, and chili in a can. As far as pork and beans go you might switch to pinto beans, black beans, navy beans or kidney beans. The pork and beans have a lot of added fat, salt and sugar. You can take the other types of beans and there will actually be more beans in the can instead of liquid. You can take salad dressing and put on the beans or use catsup or barbeque sauce on them. Pork and beans seem cheap to buy but you are paying for the juice they are packed in. So it's not such a great value.

Any time you can get a bag of beans and cook them you can save money and they will be a lot healthier for you. If you cook a roast in a crock pot and chop it up and add potatoes and fried onions then you will have a few days supply of beef hash. Pasta is inexpensive and good to eat with beans and rice is easy to prepare and eat with beans. Instead of tuna, you might want to eat eggs, or bake a whole chicken and eat off if it for 3 days.

If you go to a health food store you can buy these items in bulk foods and you will save money this way and be healthier. Best of luck to you!

I dont think that eating 1-2 is that bad but just take other required components of your diet. You cant get iron, calcium, certain vitamins form this stuff. It wont kill you but the recent studies have shown that canned food can be one of the reasons to cause cancer.

hmm well its not recommended..but i wouldnt go to an extrem..ask ur doctor

Too much sodium.

No...otherwise they wouldn't sell them in a store!

Fresh fruits are the best

I dont think so!

No it wont make you sick unless you eat the can lmao.

Watch the sodium. ESPECIALLY if they're frozen (or at least some are)

NO SIR

Not at all =].
You can eat it for aslong as you like, canned food is usually very freshed due to being canned and sealed.
And it seems like your eating most of your daily nutrition requirments and such.

It won't kill you, but canned foods are high in salt. Instead of always grabbing canned food you may want to take a look in the freezer section- while frozen food is still not as good as fresh, their usually lower in salt then the canned foods.

Try and cut down it is not the best way to ensure your health and well being.
You may be better off buying frozen foods.
Leave it out in the morning so it can thaw on its own and it is ready for cooking when you get home.
Eat fruit and salad-healthy and not much by way of preparation.
You can even cook large quantities of one dish and freeze portions for future use.

The sodium for one will affect you.
Look at the number of people with hypertension.
Many of those have had their eye sight affected and kidney damage. Canned foods often are missing something we need to stay healthy.
Dont eat canned foods every day.

A lot of canned foods are very high in sodium, which can lead to high blood pressure, which can lead to many other health problems.

There are other easy, healthier alternatives, like buying a loaf of bread and some peanut butter and making a sandwich, or cooking up a whole bunch of chicken on the weekend and heating up the leftovers in the microwave during the week. If you buy some fruits and veggies, you can have a quick and easy snack.

well, if it were just veegies you would probably be fine, but the sodium and preservatives in them are not good for you at all. maybe you should try fresh vegetables and maybe, try cooking once or twice a week enough for you to eat the whole week and then just make smaller meals out of what you cooked. Eventually the sodium will raise your cholesterol and possibly cause a heart attack.

It's defiantly not the healthiest eating, but it's fine to eat canned food often (in a degree as in you won't die or get a serious illness from doing that), although most canned food is processed and is not particularly 'good' food to be living by. My suggestion would be to eat it less often if possible.

While it's not the best thing to do, it won't kill ya! Yes, the sodium is high, and you should be including some fruits and veggies (or maybe a V8). I would also take a multi vitamin to supplement. I would also drink some extra water to counter act some of the sodium. Hey, it's pretty much all I ate through college.....GO BEEFARONI!!!!!!

Happy to hear you are eating vegetables, tuna, corned beef and pork & beans. All very tasty and healthy.

Can't possibly make you sick or kill you. I've been eating them for 65 years. I'm still hale & hearty!

The fact that you are eating them is really great.

I love to read the responses on how you should eat healthy - to much salt in this, too many carbs in that, bad for your heart,
too much colesterol. We live in a rich part of the hemisphere and some folk have never known depression or war. I really don't understand anorexia any more than I can understand why some people are over 400 lbs.

Look there is one ingredient that you want to watch for and its called mono sodium glutimate, its kind of a salt alternative but there is enough of this chemical in a can of soup to kill a baby. Some of the known side affects can be as serious as sezures (sp), and as minor as stomach aches but can also cause bad head aches. Try not to eat to many canned foods, its not good for you.

Canned food itself will not kill you. Think about, emergency shelters are stocked with what? Canned foods!! Just watch the sodium content in some of these things especially the hash. Actually canned vegetables are better because they hold all the nutrients, again just watch for the salt content. The only real danger to canned foods are those that have dents in them. Stay away from those as the dent could affect the seal of the container and botulism could form. You will not know the food is contaminated until after it's eaten. By then it's too late and you will get extremely sick. So stay away from dented cans, but enjoy the convenience.

Well canned food is still food so it won't kill you.....BUT.....

Canned food contains significantly less nutrients then fresher foods. Fresh veggies/fruits are usually just as cheap as the canned stuff and are a million times better for you. So why not just eat those?

Eating too much tuna actually could MAYBE kill you because it contains mercury. The mercury in tuna is from the mercury found in the waters were tuna is fished/harvested.

So basically why not switch to the uncanned stuff?

you still have to watch out for small amounts of lead. plus have you compared fresh pineapple vs canned pinapple. i was disgusted with the canned pineapple taste =/

canned foods usually have a good amount of preservatives to keep 'em fresh in the can for a long time. they're about as healthy as eating frozen dinners everyday - not super unhealthy (probly a little better than eating fast food a lot), but not really healthy either, like eating home cooked food or fresh food. try to limit the amount of canned food you eat, and try to eat more food you make yourself (ie sandwiches, salads, etc)

canned foods are not bad for you necessarily, but do buy the "No Salt Added" version of canned vegetables. While tuna packed in water is quite healthy, corned beef is not, it's very high in bad fats and sodium. Pork and beans are okay, they do have decent amounts of fiber. Just remember everything in moderation. Fresh produce is really the best way to go for your vegetables, frozen is very near to that, and still very easy to prepare. Consider trying the frozen meal in a bag. You add nothing to them, throw it in a skillet and saute until thawed and hot. They tend to be a little better nutritionally speaking than pork and beans and canned corned beef.

Happy Eating.... :)

Anything canned, or preserved in any way is not good for your health. They are always prepared to last or to have a longer 'shelf' life...so they have 'preservatives' that will be really toxic to your system.......once in a while, its okay but on a daily basis or for regular consumption....its not advisable! The best way and easy way to prepare food is to write down a weekly menu..then have most of the main entree, 'pre-cooked' then, put in a plastic container and 'date' them....put them in the 'freezer' then transfer to the fridge if you're going to consume them that very day.

Fresh food is clearly much better than canned foods. You see, if you were stuck in a can with all types of preservatives, you'd get all nasty and shriveled up over time. Fresh food on the other hand contains a higher vitamin/mineral content and more quality macronutrients. You keep eating out the can and you'll be up the creek without a paddle.

The tuna and vegetables are fine, but canned pork & beans and corned beef are LOADED with salt. Try getting a pork roast and a bag of beans and making your own - you can freeze it in gladware and have it all week. You can get fresh corned beef in a vaccum pack in the meat section and it will taste 1,000 times better than that crap in a can.

No. That's what they are canned for. The heat & pressure the foods are preserved under kills almost all bacteria & other stuff. Maybe buy salt-free stuff if possible.
