Answers: Have you heard, M&S are going to start charging 5p per bag to put your shopping in!!

Really ?!

when are they going to start this ?

Trust one of the most expensive supermarkets to start this trend !

nnnnoooooooo, thats bag, oopps i mean bad.lol :)

my grandma shops there so she wont be happy. :(

nettos did that too :0

Bring on the tartan shopping bag on wheels....

Huh i am confused

I'm sorry, even in the US we know that should read, "Marks and Sparks" !

So do Nettos.....

we should charge them as we are advertising them as we walk around town!...perhaps its to boost profits as they have lost money!lol.

Damn straight, maybe they'll encourage people to reuse their own bags...

Good. So bring your own reusable bags and stop dumping garbage into the earth.

Good...they should charge 5 pounds to stop people wasting our resources...take your own bag!

it's to save the enviroment! buy one of teh fancy backs for life style thing and take it with you when you go shopping. If you only go in every so often for a couple of things then one bag ain't gonna burn a hole in your pocket is it!

No haven't heard, but if you can afford to shop at M & S you can afford the bag.

It's probably to encourage you to go 'green' and bring your own plastic bags.

we should have them cornstarch bags like they do in this town in devon - recyclable, init. :]

It's for the Israeli Army contribution.

The idea is you will decide instead to get a reusable, robust bag, and not the disposable plastic ones. They are really harmful, and do great harm to marine life. Dolphins commonly mistake them for jellyfish and eat them. Poorly discarded rubbish ends up in the sea.

I wouldn't pay it. It's bad enough I have to pay, like, £20 for a good cotton shirt... AND they test their cosmetics on animals.

that's really rather stupid. they should just conceal the cost by raising product prices.

I think this is ridiculous. I am English but now I live in California. I think it is so silly how they make you pay for things like ketchup in McDonalds. Over here in the US shops have reusable canvas shopping bags that you can buy for about $2 and they are reusable. I think this is a much better idea than charging you 5p to buy a plastic bag.

So do most stores in Ireland. It's to encourage people to bring their own reusable bags to lessen the amount of plastic waste in the landfills. I just bought a few of the cloth bags that they sell for about 2 Euro an then used those for all my shopping needs. It's actually a lot nicer than plastic because they hold more weight and don't rip on you.

Good on them...least it will get people to re-use or find alternatives. Somebody needed to do something since us as a society won't

They should make them 50p and then more people would use reusable bags.

I'm in MA. I've never heard of a Marks & Spencer but, a lot of stores out here are starting to do that as well!! Ikea does it, Trader Joes has started, and even some restaurants for doggy bags are charging in Cape Cod. But in addition to that if you bring in your own canvas/reusable bag, they are giving a discount too! I guess its all in the name of going Green now.

But its not just M&S a lot of stores do this now its because of the rescling thing..

?Midnight~Angel?

Quite right too. I'm not going to bother sourcing some statistics for you on the number of plastic bags which end up in landfill. Plastic bags last forever and have many negative consequences for the environment. So M&S are responding to growing pressure on retailers to take responsibility for their environmental impact, and offering you an incentive to use some nice lovely reusable bags, and save yourself all those 5ps! Good on them!

Well, M&S aren't doing too well, apparently.

Yep! good idea, people will reuse them or take their own shopping bags, something has to be done about the millions of plastic bags hanging around.

Kwik Save used to charge for their bags, people stopped shopping there so it changed to Somerfield which is a sister company. The store has now closed and all staff made redundant.

Haven`t you heard, they are in a bad way financially? Their profits and sales have dropped considerably in the past three months. This may be a cost-cutting exercise to help them get back up to scratch. The thing to do, is take your own plastic bags if you don`t want to pay for theirs. It is not a very customer-friendly idea though is it?

Good idea,They don't grow on trees you know.

If i were you if you don't like the fact that m&s are charging 5p a shopping bag i would go to asda or tesco.

Good for them! I've got a really funky shopping trolley that I put my shopping in rather than wasteful bags. So much easier pulling it home too.
