are there any animal products in it?

No, no animal products. It is made by condensing smoke from a wood fire, I.E. rapidly cooling it so it turns to liquid.

The first fellow is right, when I was a chef and we smoke meats we had a water source to keep the meat moist and tender, in the end it was a dark brown from the smoke in the smoker, we used it for flavouring meats, BBQ sauce, in marinates and as a flavour in our sausages.

The stuff in the stores is the same, just a bit more condensed, and more expensive, some places sell a smoke flavour seasoning, I buy a popcorn salt (Bacon and Hickory) from a bulk store to add to my sausage fillings if I am not going to smoke, even for veggie burgers and non-meat sausages
