Is it bad for carrots to have a type of root inside them?!

Question: My mom was eating a carrot tonight and she found a type of root thing inside it. It was in the center of the carrot and was a white-ish color. Then when she took off the orange part there were thorn like things on the white stick. Does anyone know what that is.
