Answers: we dont have chip shops in america-really!?! wow!

Well that person is misinformed. I live in Canada but frequently visit California and Virginia. Quite a few fish & chip shops about Los Angeles, especially around Glendale (there also quite a few expats live there). My girl friend's father has a fish & chip shop there and he has a baker than provides him with both English Meat pies and Scotch Meat pies. He makes his own marrow peas to serve either with vinegar or mushy. They are originally from Birmingham, 50 years ago.
My other girlfriend is in Sterling, Virginia and they go to a fish & chip shop every Monday for dinner (she carries her own malt vinegar because they don't carry it).
Most big plazas in Canada and the US have fast food areas and in all of them there is a fish & chip shop. They are chain operated and one of the chains is "Arthur Treacher's".
I suppose the person who said there weren't any chip shops doesn't get past the Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald's, Chicken n Ribs, Greek food, Italian food,Mexican food Chinese food, Japanese food, Thai food, Indian food, Fresh juice bars, Salad bars and that's just to mention a few.

I take it by now you understand clearly what I am saying.
I always know where to get Fish & Chips. I'll tell you this though it tastes better in the UK. Must be nostalgia.

Thank you. I do on occasion like fish and chips and there is a shop 2 bus stops from here. Report It

  • There's a gap in the market then, lol.

they eat french fries, chips = crisps to the americans.

maybe its called a french frie shop!

Well, look, I am an American living about 30 miles from New York City and I have never heard of a 'chip shop'. Maybe we call them something else, whatever they are, but that term brings up a blank deer-in-the-headlights stare from me.

Yea I saw that answer! I'd die without a fish and chip shop. I've never been to America, but McDonalds and all that is American, so that must be what they have instead.

No, we don't but we do have British style pubs, they serve fish & chips there, but they are far and few between.

No, there aren't chip shops in America. No saveloys, no fish in newspaper, no chips, and no sausage rolls.

No kebab shops in America either (not the way we think of them in the UK).

Also, there's very few curry houses and most people would rather have Chinese food as "takeout" where Brits would have a ruby (curry) as a "takeaway."

And as much as I miss the excellent food available in NY, the experience of living in London (as I have for the last 6 years) has been worth it. I'll never move back!

We don't have "chip shops" per se, but we do have lots of fast food establishments that make french fries (chips). The only fish and chips chains are Arthur Treachers (haven't seen one in years) and Long John Silvers. I certainly hope your fish and chips are better than those! We can get fish and chips in most restaurants and pubs.

I have lived in both countries and the typical fish and chips shops are unique in England, but one can buy deep fried fish and french fries in America at alot of seafood restaurants, and we have Cap'n Dee's, a seafood chain, that has similiar fish.

they might know them as take aways that sell fish and chips or fish and fries.

    We eat French Fries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

Yes we have Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips people. A seafood and chip fast food store. Also there are alot of independent bar/restaurants with various potato recipes. If all else fails just Go to Buffalo Wild WIngs. They have chips. Then if that does not work go to Cleats. AMERICAN MADE THRU AND THRU.

No fish and chip shops here in the USA. You can buy fish and french fries at pretty much any mom and pop type restaurant or some bigger chains such as Captain D's, Red Lobster, Long John Silvers. etc.

there is a fish and chip shop in new york city called asault and batery. they have an english afternoon tea shop next door. its pretty good too!

i was in South Carolina in the 70s in fact it was Charleston my ship mates and me found a olde worlde English fish and chip shop , we had to have them so we all bought fish and chips tried them and they were disgusting ,please do not buy them there

i have to say there is a difference between a frnch fry and a chip.a french fry is skinny and long a chip is good and fat and chunky and short.
    lovely chippy shop chips.
    mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Are fish and chips the British equivalent of America's hamburger with fries?

Would most Brits prefer fish to a burger? Just curious.

That is right, here in America, we can order "french fries" (chips) nearly everywhere. Here we call "chips" potato chips. Thin fried potatoes salted, and quite crunchy and crispy. Generally in a bag from the grocery store. We don't have just a french fry or chip shop But we do have Fish and Chips places, few and far between. I have never been to England so I am not versed on the differences. Just a chip shop wouldn't survive here, need to sell lots of other sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, etc to make it as a business. If we want Curry we make it ourselves, or find an Indian type Restaurant that serves Curry.
More cultural foods are kept cultural, we have Mexican Restaurants, India...Indian, Szechwan,Chinese, Japanese, Italian, German. In the German Delicatessens and Italian we can buy sausages, hard salamis, pepperoni, and Lunch type meats to take home to serve and or cook, as well as our Grocery Stores carry a vast selection of Sausages. As far as culturual resturants I cant think of any more right now....

im off to america to open up alot of chip shops!!! make a killing chip butties for everyone

Do you mean like fish and chip shops? I wish they had them here... I really do like fish and chips a lot. But it's not like there's no fish and chips at all here. A lot of restaurants and pubs have them on the menu.

Its true, they don't have chip shops like we do here in the UK.
They get fries from the likes of Macdonalds.

The "chippy" is VERY BRITISH - America doesn't need them - they have more fast food than they can cope with already!!!!

    haha
