Vegemite is an iconic, national spread here in Australia.
It's made from vegetable extract and is loaded with vitamin B.

It has a savoury taste, and is quite salty.

The mistake that most people make with Vegemite is that they eat it heaped on toast or bread, like peanut butter, but you only need a very small amount of it. A VERY SMALL AMOUNT, you need to be able to see the butter and toast underneath.

It looks black and oily, and it's a similar texture to Bonox. In fact, you can mix it in boiling water, just like Bonox. Some people also use it to flavor stews and to make gravy.

It's available throughout Australia and is also now sold in many other countries.

It's great, as long as you eat it as recommended!

I'm not certain what the stuff is. I think it is a concoction of vegetable extracts and purees along with yeast extract.

I've never tried the stuff, but from all I've heard, people either love it, or they hate it with a passion. Not many people I've heard of take a middle ground on the stuff.

It seems that it is most popular, and most despised by Britons, and Australians. I've seen it in the international section of a couple of grocery stores, but I've never worked up the courage to try it, I figured it was too expensive if I didn't like it.

Doc

Its a spread made from yeast extract. It is available in the US in certain gourmet stores and specialty markets. It's salty, savory and sour but it can't really be described with any reference to anything else at all. It is it's own entity. There is a similar product called marmite. It is mentioned in the Men At Work song Land Down Under.

I've never had it, but I imagine it tastes salty. I know it's made of vegetable extract, but I picture it tasting like liverwurst spread.

We get it here in the U K , Iv tried it but Marmite is much better tasting ,and its true you either love it or hate it ,I love it ,it tastes really strong ,hard to explain if you never had it,I spread it thick on toast ,mix it with mashed potato and cheese,or make a hot drink out of it on a cold day, buy a small jar and try it ,ITS GOOD!!
