Why is it water is not an encouraged beverage (comparable to milk, coke, or coffee)?!

Question: It is a known fact milk contains more processing chemicals and pesticides than the once cherrished Calcium (other studies also show all the calcium you need is what you get from your mother's breast)

The government pushes milk consumption (which I do not understand why people drink the milk of a beast - would you suck on the utter?)

The stars advertising milk aren't even consuming it in the commercials (milk's properties make it a thin see through film on camera so they have to add glue and different pastes to thicken it for the "milk mustache".

Coke is media induced to us and if you've ever dropped a nail in a glass of coke overnight you'll know why I think this is a harmful substance!

Coffee is most likely the reason for most of our nation's anziety attacks and high blood pressure but the subtle (yet effective) Starbuck's commercials and placement has the majority hooked!

And the sad thing is that we humans are PRIMARILY water (80-90%) so why no GOT WATER? ads?

Ah, yes. The power of the dollar. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but the dairy industry does have many ties with the government and what the government recommends for a healthy nation.

Why not push water? The government doesn't receive as much pressure from lobbyists to push water on people. Why not? Because water is available basically for free. The only way to boost bottled water consumption is to send out propaganda that tap water is unsafe or is of inferior quality. They have been quite successful in this mission without government help. Those lobbyists are more concerned with making sure the government doesn't get involved with the idea that they are bottling tap water in one location and shipping it all over the world, consuming plastic for packaging and fuel for shipping while straining the water supply of the source.

Everybody knows that soft drinks aren't healthy. The government certainly doesn't talk it up, but it doesn't do much to address what it's doing to our society, either. There's the beverage lobby at work!

Milk is a different case. It does have health benefits. I agree, water is better, but get the government to recommend milk, and what a boost to the industry! See http://www.publicintegrity.org/lobby/pro... and http://www.oligopolywatch.com/2004/09/12...

It all comes down to the battle for the dollar. Spend some money to "invent" research overstating the health benefit of milk and market that to the government. Spend money to keep the government quiet on what kind of strain the junk food, soft drink, and restaurant industries are putting on our health care system. The food and beverage lobby has more power than they will ever take credit for. How do you think we got to the point where so little of our "food" actually contains FOOD? Combine all of that with how much of suckers we are for marketing.

The only hope as a culture is for individuals to make their own health decisions, looking past all marketing and being cautious about the motivation of government recommendations.

Can we drink too much water? (Nope.)

How about milk, coffee, and soda? (Absolutely.)

Do we HAVE to spend money on clean, healthy water? (No, despite what the beverage industry wants you to believe... BTW, Dasani is Coca-Cola and Aquafina is Pepsi - it's the same water they put into soft drinks. Why should you pay for it?)

Why should there be a push to drink more water? (As far as industries are concerned, there is no reason.)

Are we always going to be such suckers for propaganda? (As a culture, if historical trends continue, it's inevitable).

Again, I'm not into conspiracy theories... I just tend to take a close look at industry trends and the motivation behind them. Hope this answered your question!

<edit>: My screen name is more of a description of what coffee does to me, not so much what my usual state is!

<edit>: I didn't put this in earlier because I can't find any conclusive evidence for either side, but there's certainly a debate out there on the health benefits of pasteurized milk. Milk, in its raw state, is a "whole food" with the ideal balance of fat, protein, carbohydrates, calcium, and nutrients. Pasteurization, homogenization, and reducing the fat destroys this balance along with many of the nutrients. That's why vitamins A and D are added to milk - to replace what was destroyed by processing.

So why must milk be pasteurized by law? Mostly from the dairy industry lobby. The largest farms could produce more milk if they pasteurize everything because it doesn't require everything to be as sterile in the production process - the milk gets "sterilized" through pasteurization. This makes it cheaper to produce mass quantities and makes milk more shelf stable. Combine this with the hormones and feed given to cows to produce more milk, and what we're left with is a cheap, mass produced, (relatively) non-nutritious form of the original product. All the biggest farms had to do is convince the government that raw milk is dangerous (which it is for immuno-compromised people and for everybody else if there is any contamination along any step of the milk production process, but not for a normal, healthy person when it comes from a carefully controlled environment). And it worked. The healthiest milk is actually outlawed in most states because the largest farms convinced the government that raw milk can't be distributed safely.

Again, I don't know how much of this is fact and how much is "propaganda" from one side of the argument or the other... but it's just one example of why it's so hard to get any truth about what's healthy and beneficial and what's marketing/lobbying on the part of the various industries.

Because you can't profit much from selling water.

you've got something here...start a campain

Cause water's natural and nothing artificial is added + it has no calories. :)

Because water is basically free

because theres not much money to make with water.....its all about the cash !

Because it is healthier! Your body CAN NOT survive without water.

Because Coke, Starbucks, and the Dairy Council have huge marketing budgets. Water is typically a public utility. Bottled waters do advertise.

Because water is also primarily FREE ... or at least it doesn't cost as much as soda, milk and coffee.

Pretty simple economics. In a capitalistic society, things are done because there is a financial reward. Water is free so who would want to spend money to market it.

Bottle water is being marketed heavily using a different pitch.

Actually it is, ask your doctor.

But we all tend to want things that are within our easy reach because the " grass is greener on the other side."

There are no "got water" ads because a) tap water is "free" from your faucets, b) the bottled water companies call advertise their own products.

You see "Got milk" commercials because they are advertising for the milk industry as a whole, to support all the farmers. There is no "water industry" like that, only local municipalities.

Because water is known as a "free" source, therefore cannot really be marketed in a realistic manner to feed the commercial machine. They have already tried to bottle water - which is a billion dollar industry - but that is no more effective or good for your body than just drinking tap water. Consumers need to be smarter than what the ads and Corporations are trying to push on us and drink water for their own bodies. I mean - who "OWNS" water? We all do - so no one can realistically sell what is already owned by all of man kind. It's the nature of the marketing beast.

Haven't you ever seen teh Aquafina ads? We don't need anyone pushing water--they already do! Believe me, I'm not one who drinks very much (not enough water, milk, or anything elsE) and I hear the message daily.

yea water iskinda freeand well they dont make too much off of advertising it...

water is good for you but i also like to trink milk and coffee, not much coffee but milk i trink alot more then water and i know water is better for you but i dont like water unless it is flavored, have a nice day,

i love water
i do drink milk
but i don't drink soda what-so-ever
people consider me weird; but in my opinion i don't like the taste

BUT people prefer those drink rather than "water"

maybe
they should be encouraging people
because water can clean your system and
supposedly improve organs
idk

:]

We are encouraged to drink water in England.

And milk, but people turn away from that.

We are not encouraged to drink 'Coke' or Coffee.

Tea is ok though!

Thank God for small mercies.

Have you even been paying attention? Dasani, Aquafina, Poland Spring and Evian are all pushing the water. Doctors recommend you drink 8 pints of water a day, not any other liquid. I'm pretty sure that dihydogen monoxide is being encouraged.

I've seen water ads for Crystal Geyser and Poland Springs but I think they're not as prevelent as other ads because most people know it's better to drink H20. They may want to keep the advertising costs lower so they can keep the product cost low. Unfortunately many people think that Vitamin Water is good for them but it has a lot of sugar in it.

Because what you witness on advertising venues is for profit! Plain and simple.. And true all the calcium you need is from your mothers breast, but is she going to furnish it to you ALL your life? Not hardly.. Processed Milk is a wonderful product to supplement your calcium needs, AND the acid in the stomach in all humans will neutralize and break down any, processing chemicals used in milk..You also have organic milk or soy milk if your so inclined.. Coke Coffee ,and Tea are giant 'CASH' crops, and a Bonanza for the marketeers of those products.. And you are witnessing the coming of age of the 'FOOLS' and 'SHEEPLE' of our generation, who ""BUY"" Bottled water, when it is being shown and WILL continue to be shown "TAP WATER'' is just as good as the bottled water, if not BETTER than some bottled water.,being sold in stores today!! I agree when dining out the BEST choice in beverage, from a cost point ,would be water!! When you realize the cost of the beverages of Coke , Coffee or TEA is 6 cents, opposed to "FREE" and in some restaurants ,will give you a slice of lemon with your water if you request it,why would most people PAY the $2.00 up for the other beverages?? I don't know why , but most of us order the beverages!! And don't hold your breath for 'got water' ad's.. Who's going to pay for them , and why would anyone even want to run them?? SOLOMON

Pretty much every diet/general health/weight loss article or pamphlet or website I've EVER seen has said to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. There is plenty of encouragement and information about the positive effects of drinking water. The problem is just that people are dumb and lazy and don't think about what to do unless they see it on TV constantly, you can't really blame every problem people have on the government.

Also, those milk ads aren't paid for by the government, its the milk processors organizations that put the Got Milk ads out. Coke ads are paid for by Coca Cola, coffee ads are paid for by companies that sell coffee. There are lots of ads for bottled water too.

You still suckle? How do you get enough calcium from breast milk as an adult? Maybe I don't want to know. I LOVE milk, I'd keep a cow in my backyard if I could. But I also work in the water treatment industry and drink that too....
