Why does bottled mineral water have a sell by date?!

Question: Why does bottled mineral water have a sell by date if it has been flowing through mountains for millions of years without going "off"?

In the mountain it stays clean. As soon as it is exposed to the air, it picks up bacteria and algae spores. If you don't believe me, get a bottle of mineral water, take the top off and leave it in a warm room. After a couple of weeks it will go cloudy and after another couple of weeks it will go green and smelly.

thats a famous peter kay quote not a question.
maybe is is constantly freshened up in the mountains but without new oxygen etc in it, it goes off after a bit.

I know from one water manufacturer, that they take the bubbles out, clean the water, put gas back in.
However I think long term storage of bubble water can make it stale and it looses it's fizz.
Did you ever try to drink an old coke?

Bottled water is typically printed with expiration dates. Even if the water itself is pure, a plastic container may leak chemicals such as phthalates, or Bisphenol A into the bottled water. Storage in cool and dark places helps reduce leaching of these chemicals.

youv,e virtually answered the question yourself.
its because the water is flowing thro, the mountains that it is fresh. once you bottle it it starts to go stagnant, or "old"
and loses its freshness. if you found a pool of "fresh mountain water" that has stood for some time it certainly would,nt taste nice. all the carbon bubbles caused by the flow will be lost and the freshness is lost. dont know if that makes sense to you !!!

guess water goes stale if its sealed.
spring water is always nice & fresh, but that is when its still running down d rocks!
