Why do I have such a high tolerance for extremely hot/spicy foods?!


Question: Hot peppers contain a chemical called capsacin, which happens to also be the active ingredient in some arthritis rubs and "pepper spray" self defense spray. Capsacin works by acting on the pain receptors in your skin and mucous membranes, which causes your brain to flood your system with endorphins, the body's natural morphine-like pain killer.

Another is the rapidity with which your particular system can respond with an endorphin release. If you have fewer pain receptors or a faster endorphin response, then you will be able to eat hotter peppers than "average."

The other factor that comes into play is conditioning. Capsacin can almost be considered a natural drug - that endorphin release can be pretty "habit forming." (Remember that I did tell you that endorphins are "morphine like.") The more exposure to hot things you have, the more tolerant of them you will become and the hotter they will have to be to give you that endorphin kick.

Some people just do, and some are just the opposite.

no one really knows why some people can tolerate spicy things and others can't.

because its so damn good thats why i love hot food also

hot and spicy food damage your nerves so once they are damaged it take more spicyness to make you taste them.

You eat them regularly

If you stop eating them regularly and then try to eat them again, say in two years, you would not have the tolerance that you have now.

Its probably genes.

Some people have it and some don't. My wife can't eat anything even remotely spicey, but I love spicey food. I'm half Italian, so maybe that has something to do with it.

My Dad was in the army with a Chinese guy that used to drink bottles of tobasco sauce on a dare. Hahaha weird stuff...

Are you Mexican? No really,I was in the Air Force with this Mexican guy that could eat all hot/spicy foods with no problem,I am not being funny or racist .just a thought.

your mouth is just like any other part of your body..the more you do something, the more immune you will become to it. You must have tried less hot foods and worked your way up,especially since you know how high your tolerance really is.

i guess its a combination of bravery :), habit, environment, and body metabolism
