They play off the social aspect of food. Many commercials also use color cues for food such as strong greens, reds, yellows, and oranges to induce the thought of hunger.

You are bored and you see the food and imagine that you are eating it and having a good time, think about how it would taste, its basically food porn.

Advertisements are basically an IQ test. IQ is directly proportional to the ability to ignore advertisements.

The way they use adjectives. Pictures that you know the food could possibly look like if it wasn't crammed into a box. Music to go along with the pictures so when you are driving down the road, the radio commercials actually work.
