Sandwhiches: why butter? why margarine? what does it do?!

Question: Just pondering this as I made butties this morning... what is the function of butter or margarine in a sandwhich? why do we treat it as normal to add it? to leave it out would be odd.. your thoughts please. Then i'll share results of my own pondering.... I'm sure you can't wait for that!

Wow... i would hate to depend on butter or margarine to make a sandwich taste good. That must be an English thing??? It is probably because a little extra fat, although, gross, makes anything taste better.. which I think is why us Americans use mayo on a lot of sandwiches.

i think it tests better!!!

Well I put it in because it makes the bread taste better than if it was just on its own

i think sandwiches would just be too dry without it.

have you ever eaten a sandwich without butter or marge? horrible, the bread is soooooo dry! thats my thinkin anyway

to bind the filling to the bread so it doesnt all fall out and to make it less dry

It helps to make it more digestible and it also sticks the bread and filling together
i used to have to make sandwiches with no butter/marg for a friends child who had an allergy and its so hard to make it all stay together without it!

Would be too dry without any butter - it also stops the bread going really soggy when you put salad in.

thats quite funny that, your right we do it but i think it is mainly routine, as to what it does i think it sticks everything together as 1.. i mean like glue....

bread butter to filling to butter to bread.

Its not as if it tastes lovely, i certainly wouldnt eat it on its own lol

good question though thats got me

I don't use butter. I'm a mayonnaise person.

Personally, I bake and cook with butter, but for sandwiches, etc. I use margarine. Just my preference. But some margarines have higher unhealthy fat than butter. Check the labels. There are some good "healthy" margarines and they taste pretty good too. Personal choice.

I use butter or mayonnaise on the bread when I'm making a sandwich to help make it moist. Plus, I like the taste.

The bread would not stick together and my be it would be very dry without a bit of fat. I like butter on fresh whole meal thanks

I an eatind one as we speak and find this q particulary interesting as I am trying to cut down on fats I have only buttered one slice of bread

It moistens the bread, dry bread isn't much fun! I love butter best, it tastes nicer but I know spread is better for you so I have olive oil spread instead and save butter as a treat when I get the end off a french stick!

Well the original idea was that a sadwich was a moveable meal that you made to eat later. If your sandwich has a wet filling, then without the protection of the butter, it would go soggy. It also tastes better with butter.

Using butter or margarine is a taste we have acquired and now it we use them out of habit. I often make sandwiches without either of them. If the sandwhich is going to be too dry without, I often use ripe avocado - for savoury fillings. Others use mayonnaise

I don't think butter or marg were commonly used years and years ago. Having talked to some much older people, they remember with great fondness having dripping and lard on sandwiches.

I think it adds moisture as well as flavour

Also, it can help to prevent the bread from becoming soggy if you are using moist fillings especially if the sandwiches are being made for later consumption

Sandwiches do not need butter or margarine, it does nothing, but add flavour for some. Not sure I fully understand your question though.

italians put nothing on the bread when they make a panino...

i know it doesn't answer your question but it's true

it helps everything stick together but i use salad cream instead now that I'm on a diet

I'm sorry I'm sort of answering a question with a question but I am very curious...what are butties? However, I do know people here that spread a little butter or margarine on bread before putting peanut butter and jelly or other fillings. I have never done this but they say it keeps the fillings from seeping through the bread. I have though, eaten bread with butter and sliced banana's. Yummy. : )

I suppose butter or margarine makes the bread taste less dry. After having sandwiches without butter for a while, I have noticed the bread tasting a bit dry.

I never use butter on a sandwich because I am already putting on mustard or mayo so why bother.

it tastes better and adds more flavor to the bread, and the fattiness of butter gives a richer flavor.

They are to keep the bread from getting soggy.

mainly for the taste and to stop the sarnie from being dry to the taste.but if you want you can use mayo or salad cream instead or any other type of sauce up to you really.
but in the past bread was made just with just four ingredients and was dryer than the bread we know today so what did they use then nothing as the earl of sandwich had not invented the sandwich

bread = carbohydrate
margerine/butter = protine and fat

eevry meal has to have carbohydrate, fat and protein to get a healthy balance. salad is the veg and have fruit.

As far as I am concerned anyone who PUTS margarine or butter on their butties/sandwiches is odd.

Mayonnaise or pickle tastes better and binds the filling to the bread better.

Apart from being tasty, it prevents the sandwiches from becoming soggy from its fillings.

Butter is BEST.

Margarine is full of plastics.

The "spreadable" butters straight from the fridge contain "oil" so they - will spread.!

It tastes better of course, and it helps hold the other ingredients in place so they dont fall out so easily when eating.
