Canned crab meat?!

Question: Has anyone ever tried canned crab meat? I rarely buy crab, but when I do I've always bought the kind in the refrigerated section. I bought some canned crab at Trader Joe's last night (only $1.99 for a 6 oz. can versus $14.99 for lump at Kroger!) and I'm wondering if it's going to be disgusting, lol. Anyone have any experience with this?

Have you ever eaten a nice tuna steak? If so compare that to tuna from a can. Now you should have some idea.

ME LOVE CRAB!!! me make me husband go fishing and get me lots of crab then when he come home he feed me and when he asks me if he can have some i say no! Becouse me eat crab not you!!!

it won't be really discus ting, but you will have to pick through it very thoroughly to remove all the little pieces of shell

It's actually very good stuff, I use the Trader Joe's brand to make crabcakes and to stuff in fish. It's tender and there aren't any pieces of shell in it. Trader Joe's is very careful about the food they stock, I wouldn't be surprised if you change brands after trying it.

I would not use that $1.99 can of crab meat. It's imitation crab meat, which doesn't taste the same at all & it's probably disgusting. lol. The $14.99 is actually reasonable....real crab meat isn't cheap. The more expensive can is real crab meat and it's lump crab, not shredded peices of fake crab meat. I think you should go back and get the more expensive one if you don't want to get sick....it's like buying crabs and having someone pick out all the lump meat for you so you dont have to do any work. Much better, trust me.

I really enjoy canned crab meat. Have a tin in my cupboard right now. I buy only Clover Leaf Chunk Crabmeat 128 g for $3.99.

It is not disgusting. When you open the can drain in a sieve and check that that are no bit of shell there.

In the salad I will be making this weekend will be 3 cups cooked rice, cold. 2 green onions/scallions, green & white portions sliced thinly and 1/2 cup frozen peas, cooked and cooled then add the crabmeat with 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil & cracked black pepper and a little salt & toss. Lovely.
Works summer & winter, always on hand and the price is not out of sight for an occasional nice dish.

Crab in tims are usualy good.

try to eat it right away though, dont keep it for a long time. Also be careful because there might have alot of cartlage in the can

I adore crab, but I am not a fan of the canned, now it can be a quick substitute in a crab salad, I find the flavor of canned crab is not sweet and sometimes fishy so a crab salad will mask some of those odd flavors, if I wanted crab cake I would by the lump crab meat, and I have been known to buy whole crabs for salads and crab cakes but I think the effort of cleaning and picking the crabs is worth the taste

I've eaten it many times. I used to work at a seafood restaurant in Oregon. The restaurant purchased Dungeness crab in the cans that had to be refrigerated. This is FRESH crab meat! And, its wonderful!

It should be fine. It's kind of a pain to get grab meat out of crab legs, so if someone else wants to do it for you, why not? Where I live I can get fresh not canned crab meat fairly cheap, so I'm not a big fan of canned anything, but if you don't have access to the fresh, canned is a good alternative.

I agree with the above advice to look for shells in the meat. It's much more common to find shell fragments in crab meat than in say, lobster meat. You can break your teeth on that stuff!

Hmm canned crab versus fresh crab.

I had a disgusting encounter with some canned crab. I found something unpleasant in it. It didn't taste very nice either, so now i just go for fresh.

Fresh crab is very tasty.

1.99 for a can is not real crab. Look at the ingredients, it will probably say 'pollock' which is what's used as imitation crab. It's actually not that bad as it's own thing but it is sure no replacement for crab.

You can buy cans of real crab but the meat is always seperated by careless assembly line workers so you'll have pick through it for pieces of shell and cartelidge they left behind. Also it's already cooked and loses all the flavor and juices by the time it gets canned, leaving a very dull, almost 'dirt-like' taste to it.

Nothing beats the real thing.

i dont think i'd trust cheap crab meat. its very expensive, im not crazy about seafoods. i have made dip from crab meat in the past & it was good. if its not canned i wont try it, too much work getting the meat. i dont know the eatables parts my ex loved them.
