Help! I cut up a red onion yesterday, how do I rid of the smell?!
How can I get rid of the smell in the fridge and my house?
Answers: I chopped up a red onion yesterday and put it in a rubbermaid sealed lid bowl. Now everything in my fridge and freezer smells of red onion. I've now transfered the chopped onion into a zip lock baggie, and then pu that into another one.

A dish of baking soda or charcoal in the fridge will absorb odors. It will take a while for it to absorb the odor though.
For a more immediate effect, Clean the refrigerator shelves and walls with a kitchen cleaner, maybe a spray type. Or mix several tablespoons of baking soda in a quart of water and wash the walls and shelves with it.
If you have a dishwasher, put the rubbermaid bowl. through a cycle.
For the house, some lysol spray or a odor neutralizer spray will help. Also, if you have a central heat/cooling unit, turn on the fan for a while. This will bring in some fresh air.
Hope this helps some.
Take a tablespoon or more of everyday table salt in the palm of your hands. Wash vigorously under warm water. Rinse off and dry.
Dip your hands in tomato juice for at least five minutes. Then, rinse your hands with liquid detergent in warm water.
Rub your hands against stainless steel metal (a kitchen sink works well) under cold running water for about a minute; rubbing with a large metal spoon works, too.
Make a small paste of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) and water and rub over your hands, then wash off and the odor will disappear with the soda.
Squeeze the juice of lemons into a bowl. Dip your hands in for 3 minutes, then rinse off. Your hands will smell like fresh lemons instead of onions!
Take some mouthwash and rub it on your hands for a minute or two and then rinse with water.
Put an open box of baking soda in the fridge. As for the house, boil a small pot of vinegar and open the windows. You didn't ask, but for your hands, rub them over a stainless steel bowl.
Are you sure it was a red onion? It really cannot be smelling up your fridge and house. Maybe the smell is still on your hands and that's why you smell it so strongly. Wash your hands in lemon juice, then soap & water and then use a good emollient. Repeat this until you can no longer smell it.
I say this because I always seem to have a sliced red onion in the fridge in a baggie. No odours permeating other foods. I always have an open box of baking soda in the fridge as well as a charcoal filter. I replace them about every 3 months.
baking soda does wonders with smells. try using some in the bowl and put a box in your fridge
