What is the difference between the broil and bake function of an oven?!


Question: Broiling is top heat for grilling or browning & crusting tops.

Baking is top & bottom heat to penetrate all sides of the item being baked evenly.

  • Broil cooks the very top of item in the oven..bake cooks evenly from bottom to top and sides.

    Broil uses only the top coils in the oven, and at a very high temperature. Bake uses the top and bottom coils and at usual oven temps (below 450). Broil is for making the top of your dish crispy/crunchy; bake is to heat your dish through. (Don't leave anything under the broiler for too long!)

    Broil is high temps for a shorter time. Temps of 500 degrees. Usually using the top rack of the oven.

    Baking is lower temps around 300-400 temps and longer periods of time for cooking.

    Broil, gas or electric, cooks/browns the food the top. EX: steaks, toast
    Bake cooks/browns the food from the bottom. EX: roast, cookies, cakes
