British supermarkets......Do you ever buy these budget products?!

Question: Morrison's Betta Buy, Asda Smart Price, Sainsbury's Basic's or Tesco's budget goods?
Do you think there is any difference in comparison to their normal brand apart from the packaging?

Hiya! Thats a great question!! Yes I do buy the basic brands - from Morrisons the Bettabuy Orange juice and Apple juice taste just as good as the more expensive brands. I also buy store cupboard essentials from the Bettabuy range like chopped and plum tomatoes, kidney beans and chicken stock cubes, and also things like kitchen rolls and loo rolls too! x I think it's trial and error really, but I don't see the sense in just paying for a label or brand name, when the alternative products are just as good for a fraction of the price! Hope this helps xx

that`s all i buy

Some things but they mostly taste the same to me.

On some of the things there is a difference but such as orange juice etc can be the same product in different packaging. The same suppliers can be used by a few supermarkets as well.

some things taste slightly different, but apart from that they're all exactly the same.

I bought these all Asda brands beans & sausages.Beans
& hot dogs the first two tasted of cornflour horrible.I throw them out.

I prefer many of them, e.g. Tesco value beans, as there's less sugar! A few of them are the same as the standard ones, a few are worse. You really need to try them and see if you like them! I've heard that a lot of them are made by Prince's, Heinz, etc. anyway!

You can only find out by trying to see if you like them . But somethings are going to be fine what ever a peanut is a peanut does not matter what packaging you put it in

Some products, I buy the value range. For instance, the orange juice from value ranges tastes better (I think) than the store's more expensive counterparts, as do some biscuits (e.g. Bourbon biscuits). However, there are foods that are just disgusting. E.g. Chips, beans, crisps. There are some foods that, although nice, have been have been highly bulked up: E.g. Chicken usually has a higher water content than the more expensive meat, and other meat such as beef is usually bulked up with other foodstuff.

I dont usually buy them but my sister sometimes does and as previously said its trial and error

Hmm, I think the basic product is much the same, but sometimes they do annoying things. For instance, tins of chopped tomatoes are often annoyingly diluted in tomato juice in the budget version, but Napoletana is way better.

Most of the drinks, like cordial, is not so good either.

But some things, like sweets and crisps are good.

I have tried Tesco value and Sainsburys basics some things are ok but i find brand names to be better on the whole for taste, lasting (eg bread) and having more in them, not just filled with sauce (eg baked beans). The proof is in the pudding, you get what you pay for.

I buy a few Tesco value products, and I have never been disappointed.
I do a lot of home cooking and baking and for basic products, ie flour, pasta, tinned tomatoes, cheese, etc used to mix in with other ingredients they are fine, I do think a lot of it is the same product but basic packaging.
I have to say that I have never tried their washing powder and toiletry products but maybe I should give them a go, after all its not much to lose if they are rubbish.

I buy entirely on taste.
sains 'basics, tinned toms
bog roll
tea lights
egg noodles a few more all great.
however organic carrots, pork, tomato sauce well worth the hike in price.
some things in the lower 'basics' are truly dreadful...................................
some things in the 'extra poncey' are truly dreadful...................................

Made by the same company then the supermarket labels are put on the cans try them!

I've found that the contents of some differ from the Brands - like the cheaper own brand baked beans will have a smaller ratio of beans to liquid, same with tinned fruit - more juice or syrup and slightly less fruit than the Brands.

If you guys are into buying Supermarket own brand products then you should look out for a little book called "Supermarket Own Brand Guide by Martin Isark, published Mitchell Beszley, ISBN 1-84533-189-3
You can order it in the UK on 01903-828-800

It is described as "2,000 items tested in 250 product categories. Ratings given for taste, value and quality; includes vital facts on sugar, salt & fat content"

Basically, what the author has done is to test all the items and marked them out of 10 giving a comment about each test. The comments can range from " 10 - Half the price or less of the brand and of equal quality or cheaper than the brand and of very much better quality" down to "1 - Disgusting" So Kelloggs Corn Flakes as The Brand, for example:-
8. Asda Cornflakes, 500g, 84p
A great purchase of the beat-the-brand shopper. These match the flavour of Kellogs flake for flake
1. Sainsburys Low Price Corn Flakes, 500g, 44p
The overpoweringly sweet "corn on the cob" flavour makes them difficult to swallow, even at 44p

Crosse & Blackwell garden peas in water 300g, 55p
10 Asda garden peas in water, 300g, 25p
Put them in the trolley. Under half the brand price and similar in taste

Hellmann's French Dressing £1.35 for 250 ml
10 Waitrose French Dressing, 250ml 99p
Superb - the perfect 10! This is cheaper, tastier and much better quality than the brand.

This guy also tastes alcoholic drinks and recommends.
Well worth carrying a copy of the book in your bag or doing your homework against your shopping list before going out.

i buy some of them i try them once if I'm not keen then i dont buy again sometimes theres a difference sometimes they are better sometimes they are awfull but as they say nothing ventured nothing gained

hi tango, i always go to azda, and i cant tell any difference, only the packaging, every thing tastes the same to me,

Some are truly vile, like yogurt and some tinned goods. Others unethical, such as chicken, eggs. Others are fine, pickled onions in particular, apples, other fruit and veg. Also the oven chips are OK. I do find them a little embarrassing in my shopping trolley though!
