How much water are you supposed to drink a day?!


Question: The answer really depends on your weight, activity level, etc. As someone else pointed out, yes, sodas, tea, and other non-alcoholic drinks can add to your daily total. However, caffeine and sugar also dehydrate you so it counteracts the effects of the water in the soda, tea, whatever. One formula suggests you need half your weight in ounces of water (if you weigh 110, you'd need 55oz of water), but no scientific proof backs that up. The standard says eight 8oz glasses of water, but again, if you're particularly active or weigh more, you'll need more.

And before people say "drink as much as possible, you can't OD on water!" that's not true. I remember a few years ago when a woman died from drinking too much water. It results in water intoxication which dilutes your electrolytes which are responsible for muscle contraction (i.e. your heart, etc.) and other functions. However, this occurs when you drink too much water in a short period of time, not when you drink lots of water over the entire day.

The standard answer is 8 glasses aday...but this isnt really based on good science, and should be considered a very vague guidline.

Another "urbanmyth" is that things like soda's dont hydrate you...they do...just not as well as water.

at least eight 8 fl. oz glasses. Helps keep ur body hydrated and metabolism going.

8 glasses is recommended, but 6 is good

I was alway told to atleast drink 8 8ounce glasses per day. More would be fine but atleast 8. Don't try to drink them all at once either, your body can drown itself if given to much at one time.

i work on the ratio of three parts water to one part scotch,it works for me.

you actually should drink twice your weight in fluid ounces. so if you weigh 150 than you drink 300 oz a day. I KNOW it is a lot. but thats whats recommended.

*edit* sorry i remembered wrong. it is actually half your body weight. here is a link to a site that will calculate how much you should be drinking a day for you based on other conditions as well as weight.

8 glasses a day is normal and more is terrific!

It was supossed that you have to drink 8 glasses of water daily, but some weeks ago I was reading an article and found out that you have to drink the equivalent of 8 glasses of water daily in any liquid you want.
I mean you don't have to drink 8 glasses of water, just what your body asks, because you're drinking water in other liquids like a soup. Just don't get yourself thristy and that would be ok.

actually, you're supposed to drink atleast six 8-ounce (one cup) glasses a day, I saw it on Oprah. She also thought you had to drink atleast 8, but its really only 6!
