Rice paper?!
Answers: I have heard that one can print out photos and pictures onto rice paper. I have edible inks in my printer, I find the photo sheets to be expensive as they are all imported here to Australia. ( I am a pastry chef and cake decorator)
It is true. Rice paper is edible and you can draw, or print with edible inks, and dyes.
When the paper with the image is applied to the cake icing, it will dissolve, and the image will be left on the cake. This works best with buttercream icing, and make sure you apply your paper design right after frosting (before it has crusted over or hardened.)
It also will work with cream icings, but has a tendency to blurr, so I don't advise that.
Rice paper doesn't do well on rolled fondant, as it has nothing to stick to.If you want to use it on a rolled fondant cake, apply some white buttercream over the top so the rice paper has something to ad hear to.
Make sure when storing rice paper, that you keep it air tight, as it will get brittle if left out in the air.
I hope this helps!
