How to eat a Baltimore Crab- worth it, but a pain!

Getting Started
Pull the big pincher claws off the crab and save for later. Pull the hind legs (the back fin) off with a twisting motion. Sometimes some meat will come out with it - bite that off. Yum!


Pull Off The Other Legs
Some folks will snap open the legs for a small bite of meat - but there isn't much there so you might wait till you get faster at this. Throw away the legs and move on...


Remove The Apron
Turn the crab over so you're looking at the bottom. Insert the tip of your knife into the apron. Pull it up and back. This detaches the top shell.


Remove the Top Shell
Turn the crab over again, right-side up. Now you can take off the top shell and discard it.


Removing the Gills
You'll see the gills and mustard. Using your knife, clean these away.


Eating The Crab Meat
Take the remaining crab in your hands. Snap it in two and all that luscious crab meat will be revealed. You can use your knife to peel the shell away from the meat, or...
Using your knife, slice each half in half again lenthwise. Use your knife to pick the meat from the shells.


Eating The Claws
Don't forget the claws you set aside. Use your knife and wooden mallet to crack them open.
There are two main sections in the claw - ignore the elbow.
Place the sharp edge of your knife in the middle of one section.
Tap the dull side of your knife with the mallet until the shell breaks. (This takes practice - not too hard - not too light.) Pull the exposed meat off with your fingers or your teeth.

Snow crab legs and pomegranates and artichokes; and pistachio nuts but I love them all.

What about receiving defrosted leaky meat in the afternoon, then chilled and then cooked and served.

ah king crab the shell is so hard and has thorns on the shell ouch! and popcorn the darn kernels get stuck in my gums and scratch my throat every time.
as for your issue with pomegranates: have you ever broken them in half and peeled back the first layer of white stuff under cold water in a bowl? It works great the seeds come out with ease! my cousin who is a caterer taught me this trick.
I urge you to try it!

Hmmm ... anything with bones, especially hot wings, even though I love them.

Pomegranates, yes ... they taste so good, but WHY do they have to be so difficult! Fresh pineapple, too ... by the time I get the thing carved up, I'm so frustrated I don't even enjoy eating it!

I think the BIGGEST pain is crab legs, though, especially snow crab. Sooo much work for sooooo little payoff .... but geez, they're so yummy! It's the one food that you get tired of working at before you get full from eating. I love the darn things, though ... on the plus side, they're easy to cook!

Ribs- they are amazingly messy and not all that worth it
crab is hard but totally worth it- same with most shellfish

Yes, I am with ou on the pomegrante. It is a pain and the seeds get stuck in your teeth.
