Some people do get cravings for things when they are low on iron or potassium. More commonly I've found that cravings have to do with a habit. Say every night after dinner you've grown accustomed to having a little piece of chocolate (like me). Well, if you eat dinner at a friend's house and aren't able to have that chocolate, you may crave it. Habits can influence our cravings, which is why so many people are addicted to foods, alcohol, cigarettes, etc.

usually when i get a craving it means my body is hungry for the vitamin or other nutrient that is available in that food source, that or i have the munchies and my brain is telling my body it wants to munch.

omg the same thing happens to me, i m like always hungry and i usually come up with some random foods, like right now i want dunkin dout munchkins and pasta! lol=)

That you just made me want to have some of the Hershey cherry cordial kisses I have hidden away.

I have heard that it means your body is lacking the vitamins/minerals that that food supplies. My doctor told me the reason I like to chew on ice is because I have an iron deficiency.

sometimes it does. like if you crave ice it means you lack in zinc. but a lot of normal people have craving and just eat it without thinking. pregnant women look for that stuff most of the time

i read it means you're just lacking a vitamin too.
I have been craving foods I normally wouldn't eat like rice (white rice with salt & pepper)

Food cravings is an intense desire to consume a particular food, as opposed to food in general. The food is just good that you want it all the time. You're not lacking a vitamin. Foods that are high in sugar glucose like chocolate, are craved more than food with less sugar glucose like bread.
