How do you transfer an image to a cake?!
Answers: I'm trying to put a cartoon character's outline on a cake so that I can pipe over it and color it in etc. Is there an easy way to just transfer it from paper instead of free handing??
oh no no no.....
all you need to do is a FBCT(frozen Butter Cream Transfer)....they are super simple and its just like you are coloring a page from a coloring book but with frosting....
If you google FBCT there should be a fews sites that will give you step by step instuctions (i know for sure cakecentral.com has one) and some may have a video to watch....but here is how i do a FBCT
get your image the and flip it over onto a piece of cardboard or something with a hard surface(AND that can fit in the freezer) tape it down to the cardboard/hard surface, then tape a peice of PARCHMENT paper over it (do not use wax paper, it won't work the same)....now all you got to do is color in the image with frosting. I do the outline first and then fill in everything after that. Some times if the image has numbers or letters I skip doing those and add them onto the image later. Now once you have the image filled in completly, place it in the freezer for at least 4 hours...so that its good and hard. once its frozen take it out of the freezer and immediatly flip it onto the cake. then slowly peel away the parchment paper. and TAAADAAA....your cartoon image is on the cake...now just write in any numbers or letters that need be on the image (this is just a personal preferance to do this....sometimes the letters or numbers look sloppy when done during filling in the FBCT. ITs important to flip the image onto the cake right after you take it out of the freezer as sometimes the image will 'stick' to the parchment paper. If this happens just put the FBCT back in the freezer for 5 min and try it again.
OR if you don't want to deal with this at all, take you cartoon image to a bakery and see if they can print you out an edible image...like they do when the put a photograph of a person on a cake...some bakeries don't always do this for people, but if they do the image will cost you are $5-12....depending onthe bakery usually.
to use the edible ink they have at craft stores you also need the special paper and a compatable printer
Place a photocopy of the image over the cake and using a pin, prick through the outlines onto the icing below. Then connect the dots that are made with piped icing. :o)
You can also get edible ink and transfer it to the cake after you print it. Be sure to put it in reverse image. You can find at Walmart or craft stores
Unless you have an overhead projector, which is wonderful, you will probably just have to free hand it. When I do a cake that is really intricate I cut out the picture piece by piece and trace around it with a needle first. After I get done I color it in then go around it in the outline color. Hope this helps!
Using edible ink you can transfer the image to the cake but be sure to use the reverse imiage. Ive seen it at Micheals and I thought at Walmart too, but not to positive on that one as I dont buy crafts there much. Good luck
