    AN unforgettable meal:

Picture the scene... a lone foreigner sitting on the top floor of a Mister Donut in downtown Kyoto, surrounded by happy Japanese families- none of whom have helpfully ordered the same meal, providing no reference point on how to eat what was before the gaijiin. A tray; a large plastic plate lined with a plastic "bamboo" mat, atop which is piled cold, pastey-coloured noodles mixed with identifiable sea detritus and not-so-identifiable, presumed sea detritus; a small cup of brownish, salty liquid; a tall glass of ice cold, neon green, mellon soda; and a donut I picked at random from the shelf behind the counter downstairs... it was cinnamon coated, but filled with a gelatinous goo. I used the chopsticks provided, but left most of the unidentifiable bits that I will forever think of as plastic sheaths put in the food to confuse the stupid foreigner. The soda was the best part.

    I have a picture.

Several years ago I went to work after taking a couple of days off with a horrible cold. When I got home that evening the smells coming out of my kitchen were lovely!. My husband had made my favorite salad and baked potato w/chives& sour cream and broiled salmon pegged with garlic cloves. He handed me a glass of wine and said "Just relax, dinner is almost ready".....Yum, it was a great & memorable meal!

Smoked moose. My first dinner as a 16 year old exchange student in Norway.
