Hob _stove top ?!

Question: I was just reading the answers to a question and I'm curious what part of the world calls the stove top a hob. It's the first time I have ever heard the word hob.

European English speakers. England and Ireland and Scotland. And a lotta good stuff comes from the hob. Black and white pudding, sausage and eggs, porridge, 'umbel pie

the hob is not attached too the cooker or stove,we have a separate oven, they look better in fitted kitchens.
