I just bought crab, cooked it and it smells like ammonia...?!
Answers: It was already pre cooked. I steamed it, cracked it open and the meat has an ammonia smell to it. What could cause this? I guess I'm out $30 for the money I spent on it.
Crabs that smell like ammonia are in an advanced state of decomposition and should not be eaten. If you swallow a little bit it's probably not going to kill you, but you should try to avoid it.
I think that when it comes to many fish and shellfish, it is likely due to the way that they osmoregulate. Some saltwater fish and shellfish accumulate large amounts of simple amines and urea. These can break down to ammonia fairly quickly.
Take the product back to where you bought it and demand a refund or live crab.
Keep the wrapper and go get your money back, it's spoiled. Don't even feed it to the cat, you'll make him sick, too.. :)
well dont eat it if steamed it when it was dead. Its like crawfish you have to steam it ALIVE. You will get deathly sick if you eat it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
dont eat it!
throw it away.
Didn't you bother to read the directions? Try returning it and plead ignorance. They might feel sorry for you and give you another one or your money back.
