What is the origin of using milk with cereal?!

Question: It was too dry and someone choked on it b/c it was too dry going down, so they added milk to help it go down.
(For real, I don't know, but it sounds good, doesn't it?)

The first american pilgrims used to eat plain popcorn with milk or cream. I'm guessing the idea came from that.
