Garlic cloves are still alive when you buy and store them. All they are doing is trying to grow. Cut the green off and they will be fine (the growth does not make them toxic or rotten).

To prevent this from happening too quickly to freshly bought garlic, it is best to store it in a refrigerator in a jar or container which has holes in the lid, a cool panty works well also. The important thing is to keep the garlic in the dark and in a container able to breathe.

garlics are bulbs - the cloves you eat are the food for garlic plant

that happens when you just leave it out for too long w/o using it

you can still eat the garlic just cut out the plant and the rest should taste fine

It's growing :)

If you leave your garlic exposed to sunlight it will grow, even if you don't water it. There is enough moisture inside to keep it going for awhile.

To avoid sprouting garlic, keep it in the dark and/or the fridge.

You can still eat it, just cut that part off.
