British food?!

Question: What, in your opinion is the best amongst British foods..?
What's your favourite meal..?
What do we now never see on menus that always used to be there..
And finally..
As a nation have we gone too far removed from our traditional dishes as we have become more European.?

For what little it's worth I would like to find somewhere that still does a proper home-made Steak and Kidney Pudding but cant find one here in South Yorkshire..Anyone know a place perhaps?
Thanks in advance as always
Steven

I've often wondered why British food has been forgotten in favour of foreign. Personally I prefer plain food simply cooked and presented. Smell and taste win every time over a fancy presentation.

I don't eat out so I can't comment on the menus, but going by what's available in supermarkets, high street signs and on TV, there's not much evidence of British food - only an abundance of American, Indian, Chinese and Italian. Just as well I like cooking.

Cornish pasty is one of my favourites for Saturday dinner.

There's nothing like lamb with mint sauce, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, roast pork with apple sauce, on Sundays, all with lots of just done freshly cooked seasonal vegetables.

In the week it's hotpots, stews, with or without dumplings, and yes, steak and kidney pudding, or pie and even the humble bangers and mash, cold meat and pickles or fish, mash and peas. My grandmother used to make a tasty cheese and parsley pie for summer eating.

Don't forget the apple pie, Norfolk apple dumpling and stewed fruit with custard.

Can't say I've ever seen a string of 'Best of British' restaurants along with Ye Olde Tea Shoppes - shame - I might be tempted and foreign visitors might appreciate it too.

Aha, your Steak and Kidney pudding comes after the hotpots and stews and before the bangers and mash - how could I forget. Report It

  • A good English breakfast (or Scottish breakfast if you are in Scotland - they are pretty much the same).

I have consumed a number of oatcakes since visiting this planet (& your country)
    Very pleasurable

Beef stew and Dumplings is my favourite. My Gran used to make it for me.None of this frozen or packet rubbish!

The little devil on my shoulder told me to be really controversial and say apple pie and cider, think it has something to do with the medieval wassailing technique

One of my very favorite things that I ate while visiting England was stilton and mushrooms on toast, which I had in a pub. YUM. And I love Yorkshire pudding. OH and beans on toast! I make that for myself now and then since I tried it 4 years ago!

a roast is by far the best.i love steamed puddings.i'm not english but my husband is,and i love most of british foods.and because i love cooking ,i cook everything myself.hardly ever buy ready made stuff which my children don't like much either.

    what's considered "british food"?

mmmmm...good one... what about a pork pie?

bangers and mash, baked beans and onion, im salivating
since im scottish, i love haggis neeps and tatties

    1. meat -no one cooks plain ole beef like the English. 2. pork 3.i am not sure.except the plain food our great grandfathers ate are not there anymore. 4. yes, however it opens us all to new experience our palates have become more sophisticated and i think we crave new and different taste. unlike our grandfathers who ate the same stuff day after day. 5. no i am sorry i don't know of anywhere in Yorkshire. we do have a great place here on the gulf of Mexico i know hard to believe, but it is fantastic.

Your question is loaded with questions.!

The best of British foods to me are found in local butchers bakers and fresh veg shops in the middle of town.

My favourite meals are many...all of which are fresh and home made. I do not posses a deep freezer nor would I thank you for one, My golden rule is "fresh is best" and I stick to it religiously.

Good old stew pot with dumplin's. Meat 'n tata pie.

Yes. - - - IF you let it be that way. -In my home - - NO CHANCE.

If you are in South Yorkshire and cannot find a snake 'n kibley pud home made, - I would say your not looking hard enough.

Mmmm Where do I start. Ive been out of the Uk for a long while now and Im living in Mexico where its impossible to get any British food. Im craving lots of things and these are just off the top of my head. For snacks I miss Walkers crisps
Cheese and pickle sandwiches(you cant get any cheddar here never mind Mature cheddar.
    Cheese and Piccalli Sarnies.
    Decent bread like Warburtons perhaps.
A good old Banger like a Cumberland with Mash and Spring Cabbage, and dont forget the gravy, onion gravy is best.
    I miss Salad cream.
Oh yes miracle of miracles I found good old HP sauce here at 40pesos a bottle thats about two quid. Bought the lot and worth every penny.
Stew and Dumplings,Lancashire Hotpot, Gammon and Pineapple and New Potatoes and Garden Peas.
    Shepherds Pie,
A leg of Lamb with all the works and that includes Brussel Sprouts.(Oh god I miss Brussel sprouts.)
    Beans on toast,
    Spaghetti on toast,
Yes Steak and Kidney Pie and pudding,
    Liver and Onions,
Cauliflower Cheese... Got to stop now as I could go on forever and now Im starving.Anyway Im going to see what I can rustle up to eat ooh what shall it be...I may have a taco or rice and refried beans with chilli and guacomole, or a Burrito or a Chimichanga, the list is endless.Back in the UK in about four weeks and Im going to stuff myself silly.
Enjoy what ever you decide to eat!

I find it really sad that all our high street restaurants does not have a BRITISH FOOD menu. There is an absolute wealth of all types from every county in Wales , England , Ireland and Scotland. I would go so far as to say that very few British people have tasted REAL British food. This generation are growing up on terrible high street fast foods which are no part of our culinary culture. It's so so sad.

I like faggots without gravy if not all fish baked in the oven i eat loads of them
