If you are looking for an affordable way to go, try your local Hobby Lobby or Michaels Craft store. These places offer cake decorating classes for about $50-100. I haven't enrolled yet, but my friend has taken 3 of their classes and she is awesome in cake decorating.

Practice at home and research on-line where all of the bakery chefs went to school....... and don't be afraid to be creative... start small projects first....

thats awesome! just keep baking and bake for events such as weddings, birthdays, school bake sales...etc...

I suggest that you get a job in a bakery. Work there for awhile and see if you like it. Then go to culinary school. This industry is not for everyone; it can be very stressful.

I also suggest getting a bachelor's degree in Restaurant and Hotel Management and a master's degree in Business. People that have these degrees have an easier time finding the better paid jobs.

Just to warn you. Working as a professional baker is not like it is on the "Food Network". It is not a glamorous career.

culianry school

My sister is actually looking into the pastry field as well with cake decorating, I know of two very renowned schools that would be great.

If you are looking into going into the creme de la creme of culinary schools, try the Culinary Institute of America, also known as the CIA. haha. They are located in New York. But also have a campus in Napa Valley, CA.

Another good school, on the west coast is Western Culinary institute in Portland, Oregon. They have excellent programs and an excellent teaching staff. My sister loved this school, and will go there in the fall.

One of my favorites is an all around culinary school and is "hands-on," from the first day you start school, you are in the kitchen learning. If this interest you there is a series of school, I believe in several places, i heard of the one in Hollywood, they're called Kitchen Academy.

Hope this helps and as my sister would say, Hope you have a great journey as A Future Chef of America.

If you are planning on going into business for yourself, check out the book EMyth Revised by Michael E. Gerber. Great business thought process book that actually uses a baker for an example. This has helped in my personal and professional life.
