What are examples of American Food?!


Question: I am a amature cook/chef or just someone who likes to cook different things. And I was trying to think of things are "American" to cook. The only thing I could come up with was Meatloaf. Does anyone have any examples on what constitutes an American dish?

Please, do not include Hamburgers, Hotdogs, or Pizza. Something I can prepare and serve.

Since Turkey is a native bird I think Roast Turkey should be considered an American food and Cajun Fried Turkey or Texas Smoked Turkey would absolutely have to be an American food. Smoked Brisket from Texas is also about as American as you can get or Buffalo Burgers. They sure don't have Buffalo any where else. For sides try collard greens and jalapeno cornbread or jalapeno hush puppies. Corn is an American native plant as are potatoes and tomatoes. They were not known in Europe or the orient before the discovery of America. For dessert there's always Key Lime or Pecan pies. Just can't get much more American than that.

Where I come from it's more Sweet potato (qctually cqlled Sweet Tater) pie. Report It

  • any kind of casarole. we love that stuff. my fav. is boneless chicken, thick noodles (forgot what they are called) and cream of mushroom soup.

    apple pie. usually something southern.. by the way the three things you mentioned in your question hamburgers hotdogs and pizza are not american at all.

    roast beef! fried chicken! mashed potatoes and gravy...

    americans normally take a recipe from somewhere else and double the meat...lol

    well according to cooking mama (the wii game) hotdogs, shortcake, and popcorn are the American dishes.

    potato salad, man, you know American cuisine is really weak, and that sucks, but you're spot on with the meatloaf.

    Meat loaf is NOT an AmeriKan dish.. it's FRENCH.

    Mac and cheese is very much Amerikan.. hamburgers are german (The name comes from the german town of Hamburg where they originated) ... hotdogs are from Austria (called "Bosnas') and Pizza is Italian... so none of those are Amerikan... except Mac and Cheese.

    Southern Fried chicken, breaded pork tenderloins and turkey anything are the only true AmeriKan foods I can think of. Even the potato is not truly AmeriKan... it came from Peru... OH... CATFISH... and crawfish... Buffalo... biscuits and gravy... CORN FLAKES and some of the other cold cereals... Philly Steak Sandwich... BUFFALO WINGS... potato chips...

    There is more... I just can't think of them right now

    Macaroni and cheese, all sorts of casseroles... It's funny because "American" food is such a blend of other nationalities. I was ready to write down tacos, lasagne, and beef stroganoff but all those have different ethnic origins. Thing is, that's the kind of stuff most Americans eat... Italian, Mexican, Greek, Hamburgers and everything else in between :)
    In desserts we have cheesecakes, cookies, boston cream pie, and alot more

    american food is pretty much finger food americans have a thing with pretty much eating foods with the hands and not forks like human beings...lol...jk...but stuff like hamburgers french fries ...chicken wings...hot dogs... stuff eaten by hand pretty much

    Southern Fried Chicken

    * 4 pounds chicken pieces
    * 1 1/2 cups milk
    * 2 large eggs
    * 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    * 2 tablespoons salt
    * 2 teaspoons pepper
    * 3 cups vegetable oil
    * salt

    PREPARATION:
    Rinse chicken; pat dry and then set aside.

    Combine milk and eggs in a bowl; whisk to blend well.

    In a large heavy-duty resealable plastic food storage bag, combine the flour, salt, and pepper.

    Dip a chicken piece in the milk mixture; let excess drip off into bowl.
    Put a few chicken pieces in the food storage bag and shake lightly to coat thoroughly. Remove to a plate and repeat with remaining chicken pieces.

    Heat oil to 350°. Fry chicken, a few pieces at a time, for about 10 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Chicken breasts will take a little less time than other pieces. Pierce with a fork to see if juices run clear to check for doneness. With a slotted spoon, move to paper towels to drain; sprinkle with salt.

    Home made macaroni and cheese-

    Boil up the noodles until just tender. ( do not over cook)
    I like to saute' mushrooms and onions in butter and make a rue add flour and milk to that and then all the cheese like cheddar and jack and Parmesan. Put noodles in a casserole dish that has been sprayed with Pam or greased. Pour cheese sauce over noodles and top with more cheese and finely crumble seasoned bread crumbs. Bake at 350 until browned slightly on top.

    Tomatoes and corn are as American as they come so anything tomato or corn based would be very authentic. Cornbread - you could do a tamale pie...

    As many others have noted, many "American" foods are variations of other ethnic cuisines. True American foods would more of less be like what Native Americans ate - grain breads, spit-roasted meats, maize, squashes, berries, potatoes and dried meats and fish.

    Modern "American" foods, to me, include things like Yankee Pot Roast, Mac & Cheese, Corn on the Cob, Fried Chicken and other Soul Foods, Apple and Pecan Pies - and do not forget - a traditional Thanksgiving dinner of roasted turkey with gravy, stuffing, yams, green beans and pumpkin pie.
