HELP! How to open a huge glass jar of jelly without a jar opener?!

Question: I want my PB&J! *Sobs* The thing is unmovable and trying to use something else to loosen the top from underneath has left me bloody!

Thank you. :-)

you need to gently *tap* the side of the lid on a counter top, enough to release a little of the pressure of the jar.
This trully works, don't be afraid to let it dent a little.
good luck my friend...

Smack the edges (top) of the lid with a heavy spoon all around and then try to open it. It always works for me.

Take something sharp like a cork screw and make a small hole in the top.

Bang on the edge of the lid with a heavy handle (like a dinner knife)...the air let in should make a 'pop' sound and you should be able to unscrew it then.

OR, try running the lid under warm water and then twisting.

use the back of a butter knife or the edge of the counter and tap gently on the edge of the lid at an angle. it helps to loosen the seal so it is easier to twist off. you can also try a plastic shopping bag for a jar opener.

Poke a tiny hole in the lid, this will release the vacuum seal, it should come off easy, don't forget to put a small piece of tape over the hole..

The methods I use, when I don't have a jar opener are to firmly tap the edge of the lid with something like a butter knife (something with some weight) to break the seal...it usually dents the lid, but doesn't keep it from re-closing properly....or run the top of the jar under hot water, causing the metal lid to expand and be easier to remove.

I'll only tell you if you promise to share the jelly ;)

Run the lid under hot water for a few minutes and it will expand allowing for easy opening.

Hammer. Just set the jar on your bread and give it a smack.

If you have a piece of rubber or a wet rag use it to hold the lid and twist.

Much wisdom has been passed to you already, my friend. Go forth and enjoy your pbj!

I have a 3 pronged approach:
1) run lid under hot tap water for a minute or so
2) hit the top edges of lid with something kinda heavy
3) use a grippy-rubbery thingy to get a good grip on the lid
and then make a funny face as you turn as hard as you can.

Waaaah..... oh no, what will you do with no PB&J!!! Ok, like a bunch of folks suggested, if it's a new jar that has never been opened, bang on the edges with a butter knife handle, then take a spoon and pry upwards under the lid. If it's an old jar that has jelly caked under the lid, run the top of the jar under hot water for a while and then pry underneath with a spoon. If all else fails, go sneak into an elementary school and steal a PB&J out of an unsuspecting little kid's lunchbox while they are at recess.... hee hee...

Here's one strategy I haven't seen suggested yet: Use a knife. Don't actually try to pry it open with a knife, just put the knife vertically (or at a small angle from vertical) in the small space between the jar and the lid and make a full circle around the jar. There will be some tight spaces, so make sure that you push a little harder there. Be VERY careful.

That will get some of the hardened jelly out of the way, and should make it a little bit easier to open.

The easiest.....safest way is to use a tablespoon....put the tip under the lid edge......... put the bottom rounded side against the jar.... and press the spoon against the jar.... and you will hear the jar "unseal". The lid will then come off.

This girl I used to work with told me about a show she saw in Thailand where the girl opened the jar........oh never mind.
