Why do Americans tolerate such crappy tasting vegetable produce in supermarkets?!

Question: For example, tomatoes. Real tomatoes taste meaty and flavorful, very intense, just like any other fruit. But the kinds of tomatoes for sale in American supermarkets are bland, watery, horrible balls of waste. Why do people put up with that?

I only buy heirloom tomatoes, mostly from the farmer's market, and from greenhouses in the winter. Why would anyone buy the waxy crap from Florida that ends up in the supermarkets?

Most Americans just don't know any better. I only buy produce from farmer's markets. Most of the time, they're still not quite up to my personal standards, but hey, it's better than nothing, right?

The best tomatoes don't ship well and their flavor and texture is destroyed by refrigeration. They need to be sold close to wear they are grown. This isn't practical for most supermarkets.

Some of the higher end markets (like Whole Foods) will carry fresh local tomatoes, but only in the late summer when they are in season.

Hey stupid did you ever think of trying a different super market. Lumping all stores and all of Florida's produce on your one bad tomato experience is pretty lame. Florida grows some of the best produce in the U.S. and I rarely get bad produce in the places I shop. Besides, if you really knew anything about tomatos, you would be eating "beefsteaks"
(here comes another lame brain email again ) : ) : )

Most don't know (I grow my own and forget the store)

there is plenty of great produce out there you just have to look around a little. like your local farmers market for instance. If you can't find decent produce where you live then I feel sorry for you cuz you are missing out. besides everyone who knows good produce knows that the best tomatoes are jersey tomatoes!
