they are different in every town. it usually consists of one of the Michael's employees teaching the class after they went to the actual Wilton school of decorating (depends on the Michael's, some Michael's aren't even professionally trained). If you get a good teacher, you can learn some cool and fun stuff, but it would be a major rip off if the manager stood in to teach the class that time. Just make sure you ask when your sign up for the classes if they've been to the actual Wilton classes, or what their experience in cake decorating is. I'd hate to get a Walmart baker teaching me how to professionally design wedding cakes.

Wilton classes teach you the basics of cake decorating so they are good for a beginner, however they aren't necessary. They touch on some good points but it's nothing you can't figure out yourself with a few supplies and one of the wilton yearbooks or a similar instructional book . Practice and imagination are your best tools!

I am about to sign up for them myself. I have only heard good things and the people I know have achieved great results.

I am an instructor and get calls from future students asking about my experience decorating and what they will learn. I encourage you to call your would-be instructor and ask the same. As you probably already know the class will only be as good as the teacher.
