What is the secret to open frozen foods in zip lock bags?!

Question: Large frozen food bags now come with a zip lock. You cut off a strip of the bag at the top and a zipper is inside. Those zippers are next to impossible to open. I have to pick at them with my fingernails to separate them. Is there a secret to opening them?

The bags that have a side tab to access the zipper are much easier to open and I actually had one bag with a slide zip.

Note that I am referring to packaged frozen foods and not bags you fill yourself.

you have to cut the top flap as far away for the zipper as possible to give you something to grasp while pulling apart the zipper. they really are a pain, I agree
