What's that thing in my egg?!

Question: Can anyone tell me what that white stringy thing is on the egg yolk when you crack an egg? Some once told me it was an umbilical cord, and I've been picking them out ever since. Is this true?

its called albumen

provides the liquid medium in which the embryo develops, and it also contains a large amount of the protein necessary for proper development

Pretty much.. It's just what hold the yolk in the middle and keeps it from spilling into the egg white.
