Pretty much never. Only if I hear something on the news.
I stay away from the high danger foods like ground beef. Like you I don't buy much processed food. But the last recalls on peanut butter sure open my eyes that nothing is save as long as it comes from those large food manufacturer. All they care about the bottom line. I buy from local farmers as much of my food I can and also grow my own garden.

Did you ever see a product recalled that you actually had in your kitchen?
I usually do not, but thank you for the link.
I purchased 159 food items yesterday for the next two weeks. I trust that the food will be safe. I do take care that the 6 seafood items are strictly US grown and harvested. I also take care that our grain products are domestic.
I guess it comes down to trusting an over-taxed USDA for my food safety. Let's face it, if they fall down on the job, we're screwed. There is no end to the potential for disease from food. The thing is that I'd prefer not to be paranoid...but I did see the thing about the beef recall today...gross, but we, Americans, have already eaten most of it over the course of the past 2 years...mostly in schools and fast food restaurants.
I will continue to do what I can in my kitchen...wash hands, separate my cutting boards by task, cleaning/sanitizing the counters and other vulnerable surfaces (i.e., faucets).
i never have checked on recalled food on me or my pets unless the news prompts us to....
