Are the younger generation scared of cooking ? Delia Smith seems to think so.?!
She apparantley now thinks that the younger generation are scared to cook, and have been put off by the celebrity chefs and the standards they set on their TV programmes. The thought of living up to those standards is sending people out of the kitchen.
Bearing that in mind, she seems to be bringing out a new product. Frozen mash potato.
Personally I don't think she's giving the younger generation much credit.
Answers: For those of you who know of Delia then you have probably already have heard of this. For those of you who haven't, she made money telling people the best way of how to boil an egg !

A bit of a sweeping statement, I think, but I can see where she is coming from. I have known people who's 'cooking' skills only reached to making up a tin of instant mash, or perhaps a toastie from a toastie machine. I have heard of people who don't know how to boil potatoes and of people who were surprised to learn that potatoes grew in the ground. I even know someone who did not know anything about use by dates etc on food!
I can see how young people struggle to cook, especially if thier parents don't cook from scratch themselves. How can they learn how to do the basics if all they know is how many frozen mashed potato blocks to put in the pan for a serving, or how to take a frozen chicken portion out the box and stick it in the oven.
But there are plenty young people out there who can cook, and it is something to encourage from a young age - I let my 31/2 year old help out when I cook from scratch, and he loves it. So much so, that all he wanted for Xmas was a toy cooker!
I'm not a great Delia fan, I admit it, I have one of her books and it seemed like you could'nt cook anything in it unless you had every pot, pan or bowl that was listed in the book. But to be fair, her methods do work, and work well. The eggs are a good point - I followed her instructions for omelette and it was the most successful omelette I have ever made!
Sweeping generalisations are always dangerous. Some younger people enjoy cooking and are quite good at it. However, there is a general decline in our ability to create meals from basic ingredients - mainly because of products like frozen mashed potato.
Don't blame Delia - I doubt whether she has much to do with the product. If a marketing company came to you and offered you zillions to put your name on their product, I'm sure you would agree.
im almost 21 and have been cooking since i was about 11. i am very experienced in italian cookery and also baking as i am a cake decorator. i would class myself as a great cook. oh and i love the celebrity cooks they have good ideas and recipes sometimes.
I think that there are just so many more options now in grocery stores and thats why younger generations don't cook as much. We live in the age of speed and convienience.
Personally, I LOVE cooking. I love being able to make a great homemade meal...but can't say that I don't enjoy the convienience of a TV dinner sometimes!
I do feel that she doesn't give us, the younger generation much credit...but like I said, times have changed and so do we!
she is not giving us any credit.
some young people yes don't cook but then some mid aged people don't cook too.
yes more so younger people don't cook or really learn how to properly but that's because of the world we live in today.
I'm 17, i love cooking, trying new recipes and things because i like to know whats in the food but i also love to get a good take away.
i think its more to do with the fact that to do young people are not showed how to from a young age, in case they burn themselves or something stupid where before parents would say be care full don't burn yourself and help me.
the worlds very different these days, as in regards to what young people are teached.
I'm younger and I love cooking but am not in a huge group. the cooking kids place i used to go to got closed because it didn't have enough business.its sad but only half the kids in my school can cook and that doesn't mean cooking alot or anything very complicated.your half right and Delia is right too.
she brought out the book on how to boil an egg over 10 years ago now, but lets face it, delia thinks she is Mrs Beaton, and cannot compare with chefs like jamie oliver etc, love him or hate him i do think he has done more to get the young cooking than delia ever did
i have 3 teens and they have all cooked with me since they were big enough to hold a wooden spoon
this weekend my 17 year old made lentil soup & veggie lasagne for our dinner, from scratch
the young cooking VS not cooking is down to parents
if they dont see it in the home and participate, they have no where to learn
I am 25 and I love cooking! I am a teacher and most of the kids from school show a enthusiasm for cooking too so I think she's wrong.
I have a 11 and 7 year old and they both love cooking and are always helping me. I let them loose in the kitchen regularly to bake and they follow the receipes without any help now. I will always help with the oven side but thats it. My eldest can make a mean spag bol
