It seems like it would be alot of fun to be a chef, is it worth it?!


Question: i've heard they really don't make a lot of money. money is of course not my main concern, but i am curious. also as to good colleges to attend? any information would be helpful.

to be a chef there is alot of education needed. schools cost so much, in the area of 50 - 75 k.
try a local vo tech ,
and yes cooking is a blast . i have been doing it 25 years.
I got my education through hands on training.
There is not just food and product , there is so much more than that.

Like everything else, likibng what you do is very important. If you want to cook for a living, be prepared for long hours that always include night and weekends (at least Fri/Sat). It's not like Food TV.

It is worth it for Chef Ramsey of "Hell's Kitchen" and "Kitchen Nightmares" (TV shows). He owns at least 2 restaurants and has oodles of money from the TV shows to invest in rising new chefs or restaurants he sees as promising.

They make more money than you think. Why do you think fine dining establishments charge up to $100 per person to eat? It all isn't going for the cost of the prime rib.

One college in the US I know of is the Culinary Institute of America. There are probably others.

get a job as a cook and see how you like it. You must be very passionate about the craft of cooking and like to feed people to make it worth it.
School is definitely the way to go, it provides a great amount of exposure to all things cooking and running a food service establishment and it gives you a really good look into what you are in for ; )

if its something youd really like to do, go for it.
find a good cullinary art school.

Well, Let me tell you. I got a proffesional cooking degree and thought it was great. However you first start out as a cook and move up to chef. "CHEF" is often mistaken as a cook. I am currently an executive Chef for a Large company and I hardly ever cook anymore. I do the food ordering and manage the kitchen and menu's etc. I really miss cooking but the MOney is in management.
