I'm scared to use the torch to burn the sugar on top of creme brulee... plz help?!

Question: I had my dad go with me to help me buy a propane torch for my creme brulee, but I'm afraid I'll blow up the house or something. Any ideas? And exactly how do you do it? Melt the sugar, that is; not blow up the house.

Open the valve very slowly until you hear a hiss, then attempt to light it. Try at least a few times, and if it doesn't work then open the valve a little more and light it. When you're done, don't blow it out--simply close the valve all the way.

And of course, torch the sugar lightly.

Dude do not be afraid... You will not blow up your house.. just have ur dad help man

You won't blow up the house, you'll just burn the alcohol when you light it.

do it just go for it and don't worry about it.

just follow the directions, you won't blow up the house, you did get the little torch right...., I wish I was making creme brulee!!! Yummy!!!!!!!!!! Be brave and go for it!

Can't you brown it under a very hot pre-heated grill?

It's easy, practice lighting the torch outside.
