Why has there been a recent recall in hamburger?!

Question: What are the reasons? I know that they were butchering "downer cattle" which are cattle that cannot stand or walk and are dragged into the factory to be slaughtered. Why is it bad to eat the "downer" cattle?

the possibility that they are ill=disease

they have a weak immune system, which makes them more susceptible to things like good old mad cow.

EWW. just don't eat any of that s***

disease

Until recently, slaughterhouses were allowed to slaughter all "downer" cattle. The regulations changed with the BSE (mad cow disease) scares in the UK and other countries in the 90s. Cows infected with BSE show similar symptoms, so a downer cow is a red flag for possible BSE/mad cow infection. This is especially important because, unlike other countries, the US does not test regularly for the presence of mad cow in the beef supply.

Of course, there are many other possible reasons for a cow to be a "downer" too, especially given that cattle raised on crowded feedlots are very prone to infections and illnesses. But if a cow is diseased, it's a bad idea to introduce the meat into the system regardless.
