Why was White Chocolate invented?!

Question: I can't find the answer to WHY it was invented, but according to wikipedia it became popular in the US after WWI. In addition to not being technically a true chocolate, it also does not contain caffeine, so people with allergies or religions that forbid caffeine can eat it.

wow ive never actually thought about that!.... *clicks on interesting*. ....Yuk white chocolate tastes nasty anyway. did you know they dont use cocoa solids - the stuff that gives chocolate its colour and flavour? in fact white chocolate isnt real chocolate at all.

It is actually not a chocolate, but a by product of the chocolate making process...in fact, it is not technically considered a real chocolate.

Maybe so people who are allergic to real chocolate can have something too. :)

Maybe it was an experiment? or an accident?
