What's a good substitute for anise seeds?!

Question: Anise is rather licorice tasting so anything with that flavor would work. Fennel seed if you have that would work well. Celery seed would maybe work too.

For what, there is a vegetable that tastes like anise, but, I can't remember the name

Fresh French Tarragon (loses flavor if dried).

Yes, Fennel seed is an excellent substitute and depending on your recipe you may add some annisette liquor/sambuca/absinthe at the appropriate time. If it's a marinade it will work fine.
