Are there hot dogs made with out casing made from pig intestines?!
Answers: The thought of eating pig intestines grosses me out, so I was wondering if they make hot dogs with out them. Thanks.
I don't believe intestines are still in use, it is mainly the synthetic stuff.
until synthetic membranes all were made this way
Hot dogs are all the Left overs so its possible.
Most commercial hot dogs are a puree of meat mix packed in forms(no casing) and cooked before going out to market. Some higher end brands have "natural casings" which are actually collegen formed into miles of tubing that the meat mix is pumped into. Actual animal intestine hot dogs are hard to find. Vienna brand hot dogs use animal casings, but they use sheep intestines not pig.
Commercial made hot dogs are made in factory wth a plastic casing and it is remove by a machine after they are cooked and smoked, I toured "2" packing plants as a chef, now a European one like a knockwurst or European weiner may have what is termed a natural casing which is an animal intestine, but the beef, pork and chicken weiners in the U.S and Canada are not package with a casing of any kind, now I have bought really strict Kosher ones here in Canada from a packer in Montreal and they still had there plastic sleeve on. They were made of beef and veal. but anything that is in the regular meat case is not in a casing.
