Is it hygienic to eat canned sardines as the way it comes from the can?!

Question: or should I clean it before?

Answers: or should I clean it before?

Eat them straight from the can. They've already been cleaned and cooked. We usually get the ones canned in mustard or tomato sauce, and I sure wouldn't want to wash that off!

I agree about the baked beans, Bartoni. I love to eat them straight from the can for a quick lunch!

yes you can take them from the tin straight onto some toast, little bit of vinegar, lovely

u tell me

Perfectly safe to eat straight from the can. The cans are steam sanitized before packing per strict FDA guidelines. Grab yourself a fork, dig into those lil buggers and enjoy!

eat them straight away :)

So clever of you to bring this up! Whenever you open any can of food - be it sardines, soup, baked beans, chili, whatever - you should pour the food from the can into a glass or plastic bowl and run it through the dishwasher, being sure to add some bleach to kill all the germs. Only then will it be safe to eat.

Straight from the can is fine.

You can safely eat them straight from the can.

Why not. You eat other food straight from cans, like baked beans which frankly taste better straight from a can than when cooked. Does anyone else agree.

Sure, just lick your fingers before you pick them out of the can.

Yes it is true that bacteria grow everywhere.if the tin is stored in a warm area and say you handled the tin earlier in the morning getting it ready for your lunch ,where you touched the tin would have bactia on it and they mutiply at the rate of double every 20 mins.So in answer theretically it is not hygenic.....but we are all to a certain extent imune to our own bacteria so i would not worry to much about it ,if in doubt use an antibactereial wipe before you open it.This type of poisoning would be called cross contamination.Hope this helps .

If it weren't, it would say so on the can in warning. This is one of the healthiest foods you can eat although it's sometimes unpopular. The fish have calcium, protein, iodine, some vitamins and "good" cholesterol.

Yes its fine to eat them straight from the tin.
but don't be too concerned about how hygienic things are. Your body needs to consume the odd bit of dirt, bacteria or whatever to keep your immune system working properly. Yeah, your kitchen stuff needs to be clean, but there is a danger in this day and age of people over obsessing about cleanliness and ending up with weak immune systems. I grew up on a farm in a rural area and as a child I did my best to never wash and had a very skanky childhood. I very rarely get ill, and I think this is why.

Often wondered this myself!!! Lots of Sardines are not processed in the U.S. and in other countries their guidelines for food packing aren't as sanitary as ours. Since i live in another country lots of the sardines I eat come from Africa and it does kinda make me wonder!

By all means! This is a favorite childhood treat that my grandfather and I ate straight from the can with saltine crackers.

Why would you want to eat this delectable fish out of a "can?" Try this recipe:

Fresh Sardines on Tomato Sauce

Per person, you will require:

2 fresh sardines (gutted, heads and tails on)
1 220g tin of chopped tomatoes in tomato juice
2 cloves of garlic (crushed or finely chopped)
2 tbsps plain flour
3 or 4 basil leaves (roughly torn)
Olive oil
Salt/freshly ground black pepper

In a small saucepan, sweat off the garlic for a minute in a little olive oil. Add the tomatoes and basil and leave to simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Season the flour on a plate and pat the sardines in it to coat them on both sides. Fry for about 5 minutes each side in a little olive oil on a medium heat.

Plate the sauce first then carefully lay the sardines on top.

Turn them out of the tin, into a dish. Mash with fork, add some salt to taste.
Make some toast and spread sardines on.
