For nutritional purposes, are "sodium" and "salt" the same thing?!

Question: On nutritional labels, we see the sodium content of a particular food. Many people think of sodium and salt as interchangeable concepts. Chemically, however, salt is a compound consisting of sodium and chloride (NaCl). So, when the label says "sodium" are they really describing the salt content or does it mean something else? Thanks in advance for your assistance.
