Cassava, aka Yuca

"Yuca (also known as Cassava) is a root that is traditionally used as a side dish in Latin American cuisine. It is quite similar to potatoes and has a delicious white pulp that can be stewed, boiled or fried and is often served with mojo criollo."

Might possibly be parsnips. Before potatoes became widely used as the staple side-dish in European and American cooking, the parsnip was used in its place quite often.

plantains yucca or malanga maybe

Probably parsnips!

Yam...used a lot in caribbean and african cooking

cauliflower? I know some people mash them like potatoes.

Could it be that it was potatoes after all and
the unpronouncable name was the cuban
name for potato?!

cauliflower

hmm... i'm guessing tapioca or cassava.

Could it be Rutabaga? a large white root vegetable that you chop, boil and mash, just like potatoes.

Is it a potato I heard they taste like potatoes, but I don't know.
