What is the difference in coffee price? (Starbucks, etc) is it the name or the bean that you are paying for?!

Question: I mean, are the beans they use in Folgers just generic? Are the beans treated or prepared differently in the more expensive gourmet coffees to get them to be that much better?

it's a little of all the above. the name is famous, and associated with bitter, strong coffee and it is the in-thing, so everyone does it. The bean, because they are imported in smaller numbers from specialty farms, then roasted and ground by the company itself. The big companies because of thier size alone, and the streamlined production are able to offer close to the same thing at a much cheaper price. The small corner coffee houses came about because of the lack of flavor in the coffee made by the big coffee giants. but now that people have spoken and started demanding a little quality for what they pay for, the giants have stepped up and are doing much better.

Well yes, most of it is in the name.... but some more expensive coffee's are because of where they are grown and the quantity... For example Kopi Luwak, it's only grown in Indonesia, and the beans are "processed in the stomach of animals, and then excreted and hand collected off the ground in Sumatran jungles....

Mostly it's the name rather than the bean. I get a delicious cup of coffee from my local independent coffee shop every day for only $1.00. Can't get anything at those other fancy coffee places for that.

It is more in the name than in the bean you are paying for the brand I don't think that the product is any better than most other coffee shops

I would say it's mostly the name. Seems to me that Starbucks and other coffee shops use darker roasted coffee beans which give the coffee a kick and stronger taste. I buy Folgers dark roast coffee and it tastes the same to me as the more expensive stuff.

Yeah, the coffee war!
Nothing like a HOT cup of coffee. If its hot enough, I'll enjoy it wherever its from.. Most people will!

Lets just say you want a Margarita.. Cuervo, Patron, or the plastic bottle house crap? I'm sure the Margarita made with the house will be tasty, but you will be more satisfied with Patron.. Same goes with your coffee..
Folgers is the house bottle.. Good coffee is good coffee..

The coffee is 100 times better at Starbucks than Dunkin Donuts..
Yes you are paying for the name in both cases; but Starbucks uses a much better quality bean. You are actually drinking coffee, rather than brown caffeinated water made to taste better with cream and sugar...

I drink coffee from around the world and all I have to say is...Drink 100% Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee-- Guaranteed to entice your coffee choices! Other good coffees are those from Costa Rica (which starbucks uses).

Don't forget the other, little things in the store~~~~~ Starbucks has long hours, Starbucks has a RESTROOM! Bless them, the restroom makes all the difference for me. A frequent traveler, I will bust a bladder before doing doing business with some jerko that just takes your money.

I actually do not care for the De-caf at Starbucks. Harsh and bitter. I have them add some hot water.

Some s.o.b. at the Waterloo Road and Highway 99 interchange , Stockton, Ca., had a mini-mart with Gas sales. I stopped and carefully put down a twenty for gas and then inquired about a rest room. He directed me to the McDonalds next door! I had to act fast to snatch the double sawbuck back out of his hand! Do we not need to support the good guys and screw the bad guys of the world? And always take time to report a "bad" restroom. Use the internet to contact evil doers to Shell or Valero or other when the facilities are bad.
