When I was in China I ordered prawns and they arrived alive - what was this called?!

Question: I ordered prawn something, and the waiter brought a big pot to my table, when I took the lid off the giant prawns were flapping all over the place. They were in an alcohic sauce I think, so presumably they were cooking at the table or marinading? I was not sure what to do, did I have to wait for them to drown or boil in the sauce, or did I hit them with something to kill them before I ate them or was I meant to eat them alive. maybe they were just bringing them to show me they were fresh before cooking them later? I could see nothing that looked like a 'killing' implement so I just sat there confused. Eventually the waiter came over and laughed and took them away (he spoke no English no I Chinese). Were they playing a joke on me? What was I meant to do, I think they may have been called 'drunk prawns' or something, there was a vague translation on the menu. I am open to try most things, it was just the not knowing what I was meant to do that threw me. Can anybody explain??

All right, if it had been indicated in the menu that it's "drunk prawns" then that's the way it should be----live prawns in alcohol based sauce, just like the ceviche, which is raw seafood "cooked" in lime juice. This is a famous dish originated in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Though it is delicious, consumers have been advised not to eat them often, especially during summer time when it's highly likely to be infected by bacteria. Also, fresh water prawns have more problems with bacteria.

This is called murder

It's "Drunk Prawn/Shrimp" dish. I've had it couple times and you're supposed to eat them when they're cooked. Usually the waiter'/waitress will bring a big pot of prawns mixed with alcohol and cook it so that you can see it. You'll see big fire all over the pot.
